Sorry, didn't realise mine came across that way until I read it again! I've no problem sitting behind someone crawling at 20mph, if that's what they feel comfortable doing. You are right- the idiots still trying to drive at 70mph two inches from the bumper in front are the ones causing the problem.
I've always been taught to drive to the condition, rather than the speed limit. Obviously you try not to exceed it, but a 60mph road doesn't mean that 60mph is always possible.

I do not mind people who are uncertain - they are the ones who are driving very slowly and are not really causing a big risk. As long as people do wise up that, if they feel they cannot drive at more than 5 mph, they should not be out. However, it is the idiots who are the concern. The vast majority have almost no experience in these conditions yet so many people blast away as though they have been driving in them for all their life. Things like the speed limit go out the window, on roads with snow, ice and slush, the speed limit could well be too high to be safe. Yet people persist to try and go at these speeds.

What these conditions tell me is that there are a lot of people who are unable to work out what 'appropriate' speed means. The funny thing is that it is these (confident) drivers who are probably most in favour of limits being abolished in favour of 'appropriate' speed... yet it is they who are best proving that it wouldn't work!

Just to further add to the "snow on car offence" debate - couple of weeks ago on TV I saw a spokesman for the AA interviewed about driving in snowy conditions and he did say we should clear snow from our cars as "after all, it is an offence to drive with snow all over your car".
I have to admit - although it's common sense to clear it off - I didn't know it was an offence not to. Probably quite a few others don't know either.

they shouldnt need to know, as you stated its common sense, and in my opinion, if they dont have the common sense to be removing the snow off their cars, then they arent qualified to drive at all, as its such a simple and easy thing but if not done can be so dangerous.

There are people who i have seen the past few days driving about with snow all over their cars, with maybe only the drivers half of the windscreen being the only snow free part of the car, and i seriously hope they get points and fines, we will all be better off, because they are most likely those people who are only 3 points off a disqualification anyway!

If anyone in Ards has been issued a Fixed Penalty Notice relating to snow on your roof (or in your car) then please contact me so that I can review it. I don't believe any have but just in case. C/Insp Philip Knox

I did question that before and the response was

PSNI Ards Dmx, all of my officers are out and about working and protecting the residents of Ards. I'm off and engaging with you for free!

Childish. Damned if they do; damned if they don't.
  • Just to let you know a friend got a £60 fine and 3 points for driving with snow on her car roof.
If you are able to travel anywhere, it may be worth getting the snow off!
