Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

First of all HUGE apologies to everyone as I was clearly having a senior moment when I said I run XP. Actually I run Vista! Not sure how much difference that makes to your instructions......

I have definitely g0t the right version of Hijackthis. But I still cannot post a log. When I follow your instructions and get to "run as" I only have one option via the windows user account control and that option is just to tun Hijackthis, which of course, is already running.

I have downloaded CCcleaner but not run it because it says its going to delete lots of files and I don't know if its aok or not. Needless to say I cannot copy and post the list of files. :(

It has been Ok for a day or two with just one freeze tonight.
Thanks for your continuing support. Merry Jingle bells

Sounds like hardware failure to me. I would take it to a reputable, local PC repair shop (NOT PC World, please) and let them have a look at it.

Virus/Malware stuff is a red herring in my opinion.

    Really?
I have just received a lot of help from the good people on here, and the reason my PC is running normally now, is because I had various trojan/virus/malware problems.
So, why not try the cheap and cheerful methods, with a "little help from your friends", before throwing your PC at the mercy of people who could rip you off?

:mad::mad::mad: Aaaaarrrggghh I am beuig driven dotty by this. I know you will think I am doing it wrong but I PROMISE I am following your instructions to the letter .
So I ran CC cleaner and let it delete what it wanted. Ironically it deleted hijackthis. No problem - just download it again. Did that then opened it and asked it to scan and show log. Did that then pressed the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICKed and selected RUN AS on the hijack.exe file. Whereupon, just as before, I got windows user account control - there is NO option to run as admin.

Even worse - now when I try to get back to the main menu it just says *hijackthis is already running". Well, if it is its well hidden as there are no icons or anything else to show where it is.

    What now??
Oh yeah, hope your Christmas is not marred by tedious requests for help. :o

    Cr*p
I wasnt expecting a 64 bit log - theyre near impossible to work through

May as well check for infection whilst I get to it (im busy cleaning up turkey blood out of my toolbox! - shes officially dead when she gets in from work)

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    also uninstall rapport

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe looks unusual, maybe a 64bit hjt anomaly, have you had an infection in the past?
