HELP PLEASE - PC problems

My pc has crashed 4 times today and for a few days before this it had started freezing within a few mins of boot up.
Each time it crashed today I got the message: "Windows has encountered a problem....." then, after re-booting it came up with " .....recovered from unexpected shutdown, do you want winows to search for a solution?". I click yes, after which nothing happens.

I am on XP home and firefox is my browser. This is what I have tried so far:
run system restore
AVG full system scan (clean)
Cleared history, cookies etc
I ran a de-frag about 2 weeks ago

can anyone help or suggest what I can do to fix this? It does reboot and offers safe mode etc but crashes within 10 mins if I open windows normally.
Using daughter's laptop now as mine just crashes all the time.
All help appreciated.
Many thanks.

    post a hijackthis log

uninstall avg, and replace with avast 5 free

reset internet explorer to defaults, under internet options, advanced

backup anything important while you have the chance

run ccleaner, untick the chrome installation during the install

run a full malwarebytes, scan, fix anything found before closing
    !!

Thank you, but the bit I don't understand is how/where to post "hijackthis log" ??

    Hi,

I presume you mean run it on my pc? that's tricky, because pc keeps crashing.
Also copy results and paste where?
Having looked at the download page for hijackthis it says "you have to verty careful" when deciding what to remove. How will I know what it is safe to remove?

You say" run cc cleaner and untick chrome before installation", installation of what?
Finally (I hope) why am I doing all this? What do you think the problem is?

I'm sorry to be thick, but this is new to me.
    thank you.

This is a "standard" test for software related issues. Will the PC stay up in safe mode?

Paste as the content of a message on here.

Hence why you are being asked to paste here. The resident experts will then advise what is safe to delete.

    Ccleaner.

Won't know what the software issue is until you post the log on here.

Do you have access to a spare power supply? My PC did this (and made a racket). Changed the power supply and all honky dorey.

Also try removing all your memory and reinstal one at a time.

if you have the xp install disk you could try to repair the windows install assuming it is not a hardware problem,

so far I have downloaded hijackthis and run it.But it will not allow me to cut and paste the results. It was not able to write to notepad and although I had an address to run from the start button that wouldn't work either. Hijackthis told me to press "analyse this" but all i get is "unable to write report please try later". So I don't know how I can post the log results here :o
the only good thing is that so far, while doing this, it hasn't crashed!

  • How old is the PC? Could it be the first signs of a hard drive failure? Is the machine making any unusual sounds?
I would strongly recommend a backup.
