I would strongly recommend a backup.
Its only about 2 years or so old. It isn't making any strange sounds.
So far tonight it hasn't crashed or frozen - been on about 1.5 hours. ~Could it have fixed itself?
Can you tell me: Is CC cleaner the same as Disc cleanup?
I have reset the internet explorer defaults as directed.
Will now look for avast and dump AVG.Stop looking for answers....
The most you can hope for are clues.....:)0 -
I have installed AVAST as directed and dumped AVG.
With AVAST do I need the C Net Tech Tracker?

I suffered this exact same problem 2 years ago. Fortunately, a family friend was a pc engineer and so we turned to him for help; my pc was 18 months old. It didn't take him long to find out it had died. He kindly spent the next 3 hours recovering files from the pc on my spare hard drive...that would have cost me a fortune if I'd gotten an engineer in and had to pay.
So far the suggestions posted here are suggesting that this is a virus/malware problem and are leading you down this path. Whilst I think that trying these will certainly do no harm, you may simply have to face thhe fact that your pc has had it's day and is on it's way out...Back up your files NOW. It will save a lot of heartache.

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -
Sounds like hardware failure to me. I would take it to a reputable, local PC repair shop (NOT PC World, please) and let them have a look at it.
Virus/Malware stuff is a red herring in my opinion.0 -
not a red herring as it goes, most modern malware takes great delight in crashing the system before offering to "fix it for only $50"Ex forum ambassador

I know people whose hard discs have failed after a few months. While the manufacturer/retailer will replace the drive depending on how old it is and the warranty, it's difficult and often expensive to get your data back.
In my own case I've had a graphics card and a power supply on a different computer fail after a couple of weeks.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

If it was hardware, the chances are the computer would either just reboot instantly, die altogether or show glitches onscreen. It could be a hardrive on its way out if its failing to load information in properly. But lets check the software before condemning it first:idea:0
