Informing insurance co of accident and claim on another policy

  • Now. See page one of the terms of business with Direct Line. I work within insurance and all companies are the same. They shouldn't charge for the adjustment as info only and not on this car/policy however as stated it may impact premium at renewal. The reason why you need to notify them now is as the statement of fact ie the information you gave to start the policy has changed (ie your address,occupation,claims history, car etc) Direct Line should be fine with it and amend only.

    all I can find is.....

    "Changes to your insurance

    You must tell us if any of the following details change before you need
    cover to start:

    • you change your car;
    • you modify your car (please see general condition 8 for further details);
    • you add another driver to your policy or amend the driving restriction;
    • you change the use of your car (e.g. change from social domestic and pleasure to business use);
    • you wish to increase your cover (e.g. change from third party only to comprehensive);
    • the ownership of your car changes.

    You must tell us immediately if any of the following details change:

    • the address where you normally keep your car;
    • if you, or anyone covered by this policy change jobs, including part time.

    You must tell us about the following changes before the next renewal date (or at the time you are making any of the changes already mentioned):

    • accidents, thefts or losses (whether covered by insurance or not and regardless of blame) where these have not been previously reported to us;
    • motoring convictions (including fixed penalty offences) or pending prosecutions, outstanding police enquiries, criminal convictions or charges for a criminal offence;
    • any physical or mental impairment that must be notified to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or the Driver and Vehicle Agency Northern Ireland (DVANI)."

    the incident the OP is talking about is clearly in the "at renewal" section

    .
  • is it not this bit here? I would have thought that it only applies to that policy and that car, it doesn't mention another policy with another company

    and this bit says..
    (Any change during the period of insurance may result in an additional or
    return premium and will be subject to an administration fee, see general
    condition 4 for further details.) but again, I would have thought that would apply only to the car covered by Direct Line and the policy from them.

    A call center person may not know and has maybe got it wrong. We shall see when the document comes, 5-7 days (which in real terms is sometime in January

    When you say "I would have thought it only applies to that policy.....", this looks like your wishful thinking!!!

    It actually says "whether covered by insurance or not...."!

    As to whether it affects your other policy in any way, yes it does, £23 extra had to be paid today ......

    That £23 could be the admin fee for notifying them of the change, rather than a premium increase.

    Yep, that's the bit. The point I’m trying to make is that whilst you do need to tell them even though it doesn’t involve the DL policy you only need to tell them at renewal time.

    Only events in the “before” & “immediately” sections should trigger a premium recalculation & admin fee.
  • We will just have to wait until it comes to see what they have actually done. It's not an admin fee I don't think because the admin fee is £15
  • Update. The letter has arrived and it says; With reference to your recent request to amend your policy, we enclose a revised Certificate of Motor Insurance and Schedule. Please destroy the obsolete Certificate of Motor Insurance which is now invalid.

    I don't actually get what that's about because she didn't ask them to amend anything, only reporting to them a claim with another company.

    PREMIUMS:
    Adjustment Premium £7.35
    Administration Fee £15.75

    I have checked the new certificate with the old one and there is no difference in them, identical in every way. I will have to write to them for a proper explanation

    The certificate shouldn't show any change, so is correct.

    The change should be noted somewhere in the schedule under drivers details.

    Sorry, I meant the schedule really. It is identical to the old one apart from where it says PREMIUMS. The new schedule says in the Premiums section as I stated above (£7.25 + £15.75 admin) and the old one says in the Premiums section £0.00

    Everything else, Policyholder, Policy Details, Car Details, Named Drivers, Excess Amounts, Additional Accidental Damage Excess Amounts For Young Drivers, Personal Accident, Additional Benefits, Cover Limits, Administration Fees, is identical
