Many women are left by their husbands, very often with children and with no income or financial resources. Without legal aid they would have no recourse to legal advice and would know nothing about what their situation in law is and what their husbands' responsibilities are.

PS In fact, the government is planning to withdraw legal aid for family matters, due to the country's finances. I'm sure this will cause much hardship.
  • well your bankrupt, and obviously cannot manage your finances. fortunatly for you, the rest of us have paid your debts for you.

personally i dont want to pay your debts anymore, and really hope you dont get a further loan. Save for the wedding, this is the way to stay debt free. and 5grand for 1 day... what a waste of money.
  • If you have any suggestions about how someone who was living on income support was supposed to pay for court and solicitors fees I'd be grateful of hearing it...

your quite right immoral, someone living on income support would find it IMPOSSIBLE, to pay for a divorce,

ALTHOUGH surely we should be adopting an attitude of its not the job of taxpayers to pay for a couple having a divorce? the money spent on sorting out issues suuch as this would surely be better spent on charity work or world aid?

BASICALLY if someone cant afford to get divorced then they should remain "married" untill they are in a position to "pay for it themselves"

doesnt mean you cant move on with your life my sister for example is a district nurse, well slightly higher than that as she does that job 3 days a week and then does the management side of where the district nurses are allocated within the "district"

my sister to be fair is "absolutely minted" yet her husband cheated on her over a decade ago and as a point of "principle" she refuses to pay for a divorce

her lifes moved on and shes been in "various relationships over the decade since she split from her husband"

so the point is without being horrible is "paying for people to have a divorce is a burden taxpayers-money is best spent on other areas, its no-where near as important enough compared to feeding the homeless providing shelter third world aid etc etc and pretty much a waste of tax-payers cash"

A lot of courts see fit to pass on all the legal fees to the husband (ex).

I've known it happen a few times even if the woman is paying her own fees.
I guess this is what will happen if they withdraw legal aid, just pass the costs over to the bloke.

I say bloke as I have never heard of a woman picking up both tabs, not through being sexist.

The OP seems addicted to credit to me, I would have thought being bankrupted would have made one think twice about taking out loans.
Seems a little unfair on the creditors who lost their money.

I'd like to know how you think you've paid my debts for me when I was paying a hefty chunk to the official receiver myself and once my house was sold that went to pay off the debt too.

As a previous post said there are too many people bashers on these sites so I won't be using it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No I'm not addicted to credit but in this age it is so readily available and if you can afford the payments all well and good. I didn't have much credit when I went bankrupt just a credit card and a mortgage we couldn't afford because of being made bankrupt. We both paid a hefty amount to the Official receiver for 3 years and when the house was sold all that also went to the OR so please don't make me out to be some sort of scrounger or living off other people as I was a single parent for 7 years and worked for all that time so I didn't receive any benefits - I also paid the costs of my divorce - one little mistake and I seem to be painted as a really bad person

thank you to all those who gave real advice - to the rest of you I hope you never have to go through what I've been through in my life - no on second thoughts I hope you do and then will then realise nothing is black and white.

    Merry Christmas everyone

You have been unfortunate and been through bankruptcy this does not mean you should never be allowed credit again, I think sometimes people grow stronger in the long run and learn by their mistakes and rise above it.

The problem is that the OP clearly has not learned from her mistakes. Borrowing money for non essentials is how people get in a big old mess.
    Gone ... or have I?
