Christmas holidays

Hey guys
Just looking for some advice and opinions really. At my current job im contracted to work a specific and regular shift pattern of 12-8 monday, tues, weds and fri, and 9-4 on sunday, with thurs and saturday off. Now over the christmas period, all employees are being given christmas day, boxing day, 27th, 28th and the 3rd jan off as holidays which dont have to come out of annual leave.
now obviously, boxing day falls on a sunday so i will not be working a shift i normally work due to the company designated it as a holiday for all employees. However ive been told that i have to make up the hours this thursday, effectively giving me a six day week from the 19th until the 24th! Can they make me do this, even though it specifically states in my contract that I have thursdays off? It just seems a little unfair that im being punished for having my normal working day fall on boxing day!

are other people in same position as you0 -
yeah, where i work its a requirement for many employees to work one day of the weekend, saturday or sunday, and they are all being told they have to work the time!0

without seeing contract, seems fair. You have the 27th and 28th off in lieu of 25th and 26th, so you need to make up the time you normally work those days to cover the 27th and 28th....or have your paid docked0
-
But the 27th and 28th are being classed as bank holidays as the christmas holiday are on the weekend, so i can't see why you have to work or make the time up.0

The thing is though, the 27th and the 28th are standard days off even for the managers who work monday to friday! so for example a manager will work monday to friday this week, have the christmas weekend off and then have the 27th and 28th off as well! In my mind, it would seem to even itself out in that when a statutory bank holiday (christmas day) falls on my normal day off, they shouldnt make me make up the time for my missing shift on boxing day. It seems that because of the day christmas day is falling on, im losing my normal day off whilst at the same time being made to work an extra day!0

exactly! if its 'tough' for me that my normal day off falls on christmas day then surely its just 'tough' for my employer that my normal working day on sunday falls on boxing day, a day theyve given everyone off! do you think theres anyway i can legally refuse to make the time up?0

The way im reading it, even if you work thursday to make up for being off on sunday(boxing day) you are still getting the 27th/28th dec and 3rd jan off as extra hols, its a win win i think.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

I am in the same boat as yourself, normally if you are scheduled to work on Christmas day you could use that day as one of your hols, this year they have changed it, this time if you are scheduled to work Christmas day and New Yeas day you need to use one of your days off to make up the hours. For me that means I need to work my day off (Thurs 23rd) to make up the hours I will not be working on 25th. Looks like something similar in your case, or have I picked you up wrong?Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.
