Heater has stopped working - Perfect!!

  • I had a Rover 214SLi a few years ago and the head gasket failed on that. I knew something was up as the temperature gauge was reading off the dial (hot) but the air coming out of the vents was cold.

Traded it in at a garage for a new car and got £850 for it, the muppets didn't even twig to all the bottles of water on the back seats!

They sold me a Corsa so they got their own back!

    :p

Anyway, I had this exact same problem with my Mondeo last year, it was blowing cold air, but the temperatures were fine.

Couldn't work out what the problem was but next day it was fine, possibly and airlock somewhere or some other gremlin.

Been fine since, that was back in February.

    Are you stupid?

The car is a W reg Rover 25. There is no way it's worth more.

I am far from stupid. If the w reg Rover 25 is in exceptional condition, paying £500 may be better than scrapping it and buying more trouble for £500 - £1000.

Personally, I'd get rid and buy something else but I don't know the OP's financial status or desire for a new car.

    Stay cool.

Ha! Gene is very much correct I'm afraid (God, the Gene Hunt thing is attractive - loved that character :o). Not in exceptional condition but I am fond of it (Dumb, I know).

BUT, am typing from work now and it got me here with no problems at all. In fact it's running better than it has for weeks and as an added Brucie Bonus, the heaters are working again. Coolant level hasn't dropped further. Fingers crossed it gets me home in morning but I took earlier advice and am prepared for an emergency breakdown...

Will pop it into garage anyway to have its gasket glanced at for peace of mind.

New year car shopping then - yay.

If it now appears to be toasting the tootsies, then I would leave off the new car shopping for now.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

You might have a leaking radiator. With the extreme cold weather the radiator might not have been in the coolant circuit for very long as the thermostat may have remained closed. I have also known the radiator cap to fail on a Rover and new caps are usually available on eBay for a fiver or so.

If looking for a new car, some dealers are offering scrappage schemes and you could get £2,000 off a new car.

    Stay lucky.
