If you've got a creamy looking substance on the cam's or filler cap then your head gasket is gone.

The Rover K-Series engine (which your car has) is renouned for having a weak Head Gasket. If the oil is a sort of light brown colour (a bit like chicken soup!), it'll be the headgasket. Does the temp. guage rise as it should do?0
