Banning some-one for life and a hefty fine would go a long way to putting a stop to it:j

It might deter some but I often read in my local paper of people who were up at court again for driving whilst banned, sometimes for the 3rd and 4th time

Gosh. What a lot of hot air!
First off you shouldn't have a limit of absolute zero because it is unrealistic as there are products you may consume that would give a tiny reading. For those who think that basically you should never have a drink and then drive they should at least propose a minimal lmit that will account for the medicine or two liqueur chocolates but put you over the limit if you have drunk rather less than at present. You can agree or disagree with this but at least it has some logic. The zero position does not.

I did also wonder about medicines, vinegar etc but there are 10 countries who have a zero limit

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Hungary, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Slovak Republic, Uzbekistan and Bahrain

In Scotland this year if you get caught a second time they take your car off you, and sell or crush it.

What happens if it is not your car that you are driving then I am not sure.

Yeah, I don't know either. I saw on the news last week that over 100 vehicles were confiscated in the past 12 months

NO ALCOHOL WHEN DRIVING - that's what it should be.
    .
Very true. I do find my pint spills when I try to change gear :)
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    I can't.

Neither can I be bothered to do a search for the statistics;)
  • You have not even started on age yet - my now deceased FIL was a menace on the roads - I caused much hurt and upset by banning my family from his car. This was after in 1 day he drove through a crowded pedestrian crossing without noticing any pedestrians in spite of our yells to "stop, Stop, Stop" and driving at around 20 in a supermarket car park straight at a lamp post and only failing to drive straight into it because of us all literally screaming at the top of our voices "Stop". Fact was he could not see but wouldnt get his eyes checked. Would not drive at night and avoided certain roads because he could not understand the filter lanes, so would park miles short of where he needed to go and walk the rest with his family in tow.
Isn't that just as bad as drink driving - I felt so but can you report your family for being blind and driving?
And why do pubs have such big car parks? And why are some popular ones out in the countryside? Come on - theres not that many nominated drivers out there is there?
It's a very serious crime and I think deserving of more than a driving ban (Which is often ignored and No insurance added to the list) but its also a Crime that many people are unaware they are breaking as they are over limit the day after, or dont understand the law as it stands.
Now while a zero limit is desirable, it's totaly unenforecable in the UK, you have to with a law that has a reasonable chance of being obeyed by the majority of drivers. You cant compare what is enforecable in the UK with what they can do in Uzbekistan.
I think drivers should be roundly discouraged from drinking any alcohol and then driving - that the penalties for being seriously over the limit should be draconian - but a Zero limit is a non starter

You'd expect drink related accidents to be lower obviously but it could be that they still do it and just get caught (or not).

I wouldn't be surprised if their overall accident rate was much higher going by the state of some of the vehicles in some of those countries
