    Half a lager?

    Half a shandy?

    Glass of sherry?

    2 Chocolate Liquers?

Do you also feel that people with Colds, Flu, Stress should not drive?

What about having a hands free mobile?

What about going 5% over the speed limit?

    What about a chatty passenger?

All of these could make an accident more likely, do you want them banned?

There may be many reasons why people have a drink and then drive.

Simple in principle but not in practice.
  • Unnaceptable, if you had a member of your family killed or injured by a drink driver you would agree, and YES IF cold/flu remedy affects your ability to drive and puts you over the limit then NO you shouldnt drive:mad: It IS simple on practise if youre going to have a drink dont get in your car to drive!!!!

Currently there is not a lot to stop people.
  • Banning some-one for life and a hefty fine would go a long way to putting a stop to it:j

Gosh. What a lot of hot air!
First off you shouldn't have a limit of absolute zero because it is unrealistic as there are products you may consume that would give a tiny reading. For those who think that basically you should never have a drink and then drive they should at least propose a minimal lmit that will account for the medicine or two liqueur chocolates but put you over the limit if you have drunk rather less than at present. You can agree or disagree with this but at least it has some logic. The zero position does not.

Second, since when do we allow victims to decide or carry out the punishments? If you have suffered or someone close you has then you are not, inderstandably, going to have the most balanced view.

If you are convicted of driving whilst over the limit (and I haven't been to save you asking) then you face a. a ban b. a fine c. probably paying some costs d. a hugely increased insurance premium for years when you come back to it. e. possibly loss of job.

Thirdly it isn't just drink. How about those who are high on drugs? The law is not sufficiently robust on this. Do we ban for all drugs? Do we treat illegal ones differently from prescription drugs? What about driving after having suffered a physical injury which impairs control? Do we ban all mobile phones or someone who uses one from driving for life? What about being so tired you can't think or see? What about having bad sight and not having it tested? All of these are choices people make and selecting drink as the one that suffers worse than the others is not very rational which is not to say that those who drink and cause accidents and injury should not be punished.

If you haven't died of boredom getting this far I suppose what I am saying is let's get this a bit more in proportion.
You might say that the standard punishment is too little for killing or maiming someone as several have done on this thread but you may of course be stopped and caught and have caused no damage at all. You will still be banned but I don't think "life" is the right tariff when you compare it with other sentences and in any event if you casue damage to people and/or loss of life then the drinking aspect is only one of a number of charges you will face.
