So they've been doing them since before they were invented?

    Clever!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

That would be weird  They are offering implants since 1992 (the clinic was opened in 1958). I was always bad with numbers :)

People should do their research.... looking for quality of work at a reasonable cost, rather than the cheapest.

There is certainly no guarantee that a British practitioner will be better. In fact the first British dentist I visited was absolutely awful. His technique and manner were abysmal.
The position in which I was placed, together with the instruments used, produced a 'gagging reflex' to which he did not appear to have a solution. So he blamed me. No treatment whatsoever performed. Quoted £2000 plus for a Dental Implant. He wasn't to have been the Implantologist. Thank goodness. Happy to escape.

Went to a second British dentist. No problems whatsoever. She understood that you just have to seat the patient in a different position to avoid the gagging reflex. Funny isn't it? Frightening really. :)
Had a good manner and obviously appeared to understand what she was doing.
Quoted £2500 for a Dental Implant and £150 for a visit from a Oral Surgeon to check bone density.

As I was going to Thailand on holiday, I decided to wait and see what was on offer.

Found a Dental Hospital in Bangkok and was quoted £1000 for the Implant. Had a consultation and a 3D XRay. £13.
Decided not to go ahead, as I really didn't like the manner of the dentist. Even though she wasn't the one doing the Implant, she seemed altogether too businesslike.

After much more research, I found a dentist and maxillofacial surgeon at a another hospital.
Excellent, manner, good English and altogether a positive experience to far.

Price is around £800 for new patients(because of the currently poor exchange rate).

Donnie is right - do your research - cheapest is usually not the best!

There is a dental practice in Bangkok (Bangkok smile) which I would avoid at all costs. They have a few surgeries apparently.

I was in Bangkok and my dental bridge was a little slack so I made an appointment just to refit - a very simple process.

The 'dentist' after having a good poke and prod decided my amalgum fillings needed replacing and dental bridge had to be replaced all costing about £500.00.

I declined the offer as it was non-emergency.

On my return home, I had a check up and was informed my fillings were fine and my bridge was refitted - all for just over £15.00!

    Just be wary!

Even though this thread was started over three years ago and has just re-surfaced, it is still a good thread for information and help.

I hope those of you who find a good dentist are happy and hope that your experience will help others considering treatment abroad.

A problem a friend of mine recently experienced is that they opted for treatment abroad and had a great holiday in with the trip, so all is well upto now. However!!!!!!!!! Two months on and there was a major problem which was causing terrible pain. A telephone call to the local dentist where they are (were!!) a patient and he says "sorry, I can't help you, go back to the dentist who did the treatment". To me that is a fair point from the dentist and hopefully they are not all like that, but it leaves you in a very vunerable position when you have severe pain. All of a sudden you are calling a dentist abroad, booking flights, hotels, car hire, etc, etc, and what appeared like a cheap and good option suddenly turns into a disaster and a very costly experience - not to mention the time you have to take unpaid off work!!

Please think carefully when looking at the option of treatment abroad. This country without doubt is struggling with the health service and dentists appear to have jumped on the gravy train with "private quotations" but you live here and they work here and they are close when you are in pain!!!! Sometimes worth its weight in gold (and that's not cheap at the moment!!)

From my point of view, it is totally unprofessional for a/your doctor to simply ignore your problems just because they are not responsible for that particular issue. What if you go and have treatment abroad? This doesn't mean that you are not satisfied with the quality of your local dentist's work, it's just that treatment abroad is more affordable.

I don't think you quite appreciate the position a dentist would be in.

The patient has opted, for whatever reason, to get treatment outside of the juristriction of the UK legal system. Therefore, if something has gone badly wrong, that patient will have to obtain any redress through the legal structure of the country where the work was done.

If, whilst in trouble, the patient presents themselves back at a UK dentist then anything that dentist does is subject to scrutiny by UK ambulance chaser lawyers.

So, the patient toddles of to Medical-Lawyers-4-u, determined to get their money back for the bad treatment abroad. The lawyer says "No can do, but lets have a look at what the UK dentist did when you turned up in pain."

He requests the notes, and has a read.

"Oh" He says - "he didn't examin you for a clicking jaw", and "Oh, goodness me, he didn't even carry out a BPE examination"

Never mind that the receptionist had slotted you in for a quick 5 min 'look' because you were in agony and had a face like a football.

    You didn't carry out a thorough examination - where there's blame, there's a claim!

Patient, who is just peed off at dentists in general, happily sues English dentist for the cost of the work. After all, it WAS UK dentists fault, for being so expensive in the first place!

Far fetched? NO - it happens.

If you go abroad, then that's your choice, but don't expect anybody back in this country to be rushing to your aid if it all goes pear shaped.

You pays yer money, you takes yer choice.

I had a bridge done in Fethiye Turkey 3 years ago. It was 4 units, 2 extractions. The dentist was a lovely lady who came highly recommended by a friend and does lots of work for english people. I saved over £1300. My dentist here is amazed he says the work is perfect!

Forget all your preconcieved ideas about Eastern Europe! Without doubt the most proffesional treatment and the nicest of people! My wife received substantial work, outstanding results and a budget price also.

We were met at the airport, stayed at a nice apartment and were collected daily for treatment ( all included in price)

Some UK Dental clinics could learn a lot from this clinic !!!!
I would recommend everyone to go to Slovenia. A very well developed country-we are in group in South Africa(World Cup 10)..
Dent IQ - For sure "best quality/price" in EU dental clinic!

Erm, this rather smacks of spam doesnt it? You went to slovenia for this outstanding dental work and then follow it ups with "WE are in group..........."

Ever heard the saying "you get what you pay for"? Now, there was a fair point mentioned above, related to embassy staff and where they get their dental work done.. but as I said before, you get what you pay for.. and the same goes for dental work abroad... don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't go do it, I'm saying go do it go right ahead, but since you're saving money anyway (and a considerable amount as well) don't look for the best deal over there.. on the contrary, choose a clinic that's a bit more expensive, you'll most probably find they do the better job..
