Dental Work Abroad

Hi all,

I'm intending to travel round the world for a year starting next week. I wanted to get some major cosmetic dental work done before I leave but don't have time. Anyway it just occurred to me that perhaps I could get the work done abroad cheaper? The treatment I am planning was quoted at over £4000 at home.

A rough and incomplete itinerary will be China > SE Asia > Aus/NZ > but plans will probably change and I'm happy to go just about anywhere that I won't get shot/kidnapped/raped.

Anyone have any ideas or info? Obviously I would like the work done to the highest standard but surely there are places in the world where it would be but wouldn't cost as much as in the UK!

Thanks :D
Phil

PS after the debacle that occurred the last time I asked this question, can I humbly request on-topic replies? I assure any interested parties that quality of treatment considerations are top of my list. :)

  • I know a few people who've done cosmetic dental work in Bangkok. There is a very good dental hospital there, and apparently doesn't cost too much.

Let's hope this thread doesn't get like the last one ;)

Also try on the tripadvisor forums for Bangkok as the same question is asked a lot and it's far cheaper than in the UK.

I wouldn't have thought Oz/NZ would be a cheap option - are you coming home from NZ via Asia again ?

Remember if you are getting a lot of work done that you may need up to 2 weeks in somewhere like Bangkok as you will need repeat visits etc

  • Hi pwni,

The only tip I was given when travelling to more exotic parts of the world, was to check out where British Embassy Staff got their dental (or medical) treatment locally!

I found this to be an OK method, but the only thing to be aware of, like here really, is that the front-line staff tended to go to the cheaper dentists and get basic but essential work done - the middle maagement tend to go to the better dentists locally and get better service too, but pay more and the highest ranking staff or visiting government officials tend to go to the best available in that area, but usually someone else (ie the taxpayer) is paying!

I am not saying this is a fool-proof method or that it will deliver the "best" dental care locally, but it will hopefully avoid THE major pitfall/lottery of going to someone who markets themselves well but actually delivers poor quality or causes avoidable complications several years later.

Now putting price aside for the moment, I would be interested to know how anyone else on here would judge a good Dentist, either over here in the UK or Abroad.

Is there a top ten list of features that is reliable for you?

    Good luck with your travels,

    DownInTheMouth.

Pwni, apologies for my part in the hijack of your previous thread. This often happens on here, sadly. I hope you now get some straight answers.
  • if youve been let down and misled, then i suppose the best thing to do is name and shame like your doing. ive had implants in budapest which...so far...i am reasonably happy with (ive got to go back) at kreativ. They kept to their quote but i do notice they are a bit vague with timescales...they dont want to put people off i suppose. At kreativ if they promise the job will be done and it isnt, will pay for return journey but i understand time is valuable

I was in Thailand for 5 weeks last year and met lots of people who had come to do dental work. I did not meet a single person who was not happy with the service and cost.

Who did you go to in Bupdapest?

Thailand, Singapore and India are all popular places to have your dental work done. There are naturally risks involved, but read up and it should be OK.
