I like that link So Sad Angel and yeah "no debt problems are unsolvable".

With bankruptcy comes a load of questions or 'what if's'. Maybe in the new year when the board becomes a lot busier as it always tends to do, it would be helpful to pay attention to bumping the debt organisation contact details and links like the above focusing on debt crisis and how to deal with it, that way lurkers and new posters don't have to neccessarily have to ask a question to see the help they need first off

That is after all why I joined this board to get help with my issues

I've been on here for a while now -I'm not bankrupt or planning to go bankrupt but I know how scary people find dealing with debt - 99% of people on here are lovely and will try and help out - sometimes people post things meant with the best intentions but that are hard to hear and sometimes, just sometimes you get nasty/ignorant people - do not let such people put you off.
There is lots of help and suport so just ignore the idiots.

    Good Evening everyone...

Just wanted to re-iterate Andrea's message and the ethos behind the Bankruptcy Board :)
    MSE_Andrea wrote: »
The Bankruptcy Board is about people who've gone Bankrupt (BR for short) helping out people who are thinking of doing it but don't know where to start and need guidance.

Many of the people who post on here already have a huge wealth of knowledge on the subject and are only too willing to help guide you along based on their own experiences.

If you feel you can do with their help please do start your own discussion/post your question on the board, then post your link to it in here so regulars reading this who may not have spotted it know you're asking for help.

As happens on many forums and social networking sites, you may sometimes see a post that doesn't seem in keeping with the friendly forum we try to make this. Sometimes it's just someone having an off day, sometimes it's what's called trolling.

If you do see a post you feel the Forum Team should be aware of, just report it by clicking the abuse button, then ignore it. Don't reply back as that gives the Forum Team more work and delays any action while they work out what's going on.

Now I'll let the good people of the bankruptcy board take over.

    Good luck and take care

    Andrea :)

For years I have not managed my finances properly. Now that it matters I have to sort my debts out. I have a feeling that its a big enough for me to go BR. The only two things that worry me are 1. loosing a great woman who I love very much but is mixed up in my mess because we live together (only 1 year together) 2. I run a small business that is getting there and could all be gone.
I had my CAB meeting and now waiting for the specialist appointment.
Does going bankrupt mean that your stuffed twice because your self employed.
I am not turning back now. I will be debt free at some point I just wonder what its going to cost me (us) in tears and heartache.

Just starting out. Getting wiser thanks to you.

    Hiya Zilly & welcome.

First of all well done for your first post. You have done the right thing by speaking to CAB & remember CCCS & Nat debtline are available if you need advice in the meantime. I consulted all three before I made any decisions.

Is your business Ltd? BR means you cannot be a co director or co secretary whilst undischarged but if you are a sole trader then your business will continue as that is your livelihood.

You have taken those first steps to sort this & if BR is the answer then the pressure of untenable debt will lift & allow you to rebuild your lives. Believe me once you get to grips with sorting your debt you will feel empowered & back on an even keel.

You may be better to start your own thread...just click the `new thread` button on the BR board page.

    Hi Zillyboy,

I recently went bankrupt and run my own business (Sole Trader) - after nearly 5 years of trading my business became viable (in term of paying me a wage) about 2 years ago. Unfortunately the personal debts I had racked up (many were from years before I started my business) were crippling my business.

My biggest worry in going Bankrupt was whether I would lose my business - like yours, I feel it could grow and be successful. I am still trading (there's a technicality that you close the books on the day of BR and then reopen the business but it's pretty straightforward)...

As SoSadAngel says, it is different if you are a LTD company - and my business didn't owe any business debts either, so I have retained the goodwill of my suppliers - most of them don't even know I went bankrupt (you only have to tell them if you want credit of more than £500)..

I ran my stock down in the 2 or 3 months before petitioning for Bankruptcy and the Official Receiver allowed me to keep the small amount I had...

I don't have to pay anything to the OR (no excess income) but I will have to submit my books for review in May and again next November, before my automatic discharge - If I've made masses of profit then I may be subject to a IPA...

Hope these snippets from my own experiences help to reassure you - it's not the same for everyone but if you start a new thread more people will be along to help :)
