Still receiving post for previous owner (deceased)

As the post states My partner and I bought our house 12 months ago, the previous owner had died in May 2009 (18 months ago)

Yet again I am being inundated with post addresed to her, I made some labels and throughout last christmas and earlier this year sent EVERYTHING back to the solicitors. The post stopped coming for her by about May.

It has now started again, thus far 5 Christmas cards and various other things. I have sent them off again requesting on the back that the sender be informed.

How much longer should I continue to do this? I accept its no "skin off my nose" But it is starting to get on my nerves.

Apparently the living relative in the uk, didn't tell any of the ladys friends that she had died, and was only interested in the money....

I actully opened a few of the Christmas cards, and they mentioned visiting in the new year....... I really dont fancy starting the new year consoling strangers on my doorstep.........

Advice please

I was getting Xmas cards etc for previous owners when I'd been in a house 7 years. If there's no return address on some things they can't be informed.
  • If it has a return address just scribble RTS on it and pop it in post, no need for labels...

Registering with the MPS will stop any unsolicited mail, which you may have already done.

It does take a while to stop.

As for other companies who have her on their formal mailing list, you will have to send the items back with no longer at this address. Then that stops eventually.

As for Christmas cards, I do find it very strange that people can not talk for years and still send Christmas cards to people - what's the point?! We just got one that says the name of the house (not mine) but then "next to (my door number)". Then it twigged that it is indeed next door, the name on it must be the person before the woman who sold to my current neighbours who are up for sale again. And the weird address is from when it was just built in our back garden about 20 years ago! You can't stop it really. I did open it and all they had put inside was "from Carol and Pete" or whatever their names were. Not even the name of the person they were sending it to! Pointless. That's not friendship.

You'll have to get over it and just put it in the recycling bin and thank that you don't have anything worse pressing on your mind! :) Or put them up and pretend you have more friends than you do!

AS both my parents died within the last three years, I can confirm it is absolutely impossible for any relative to know who to contact to stop mail...having gone through address books and replied to stacks and stacks of mail as it came in - I expect it is still going to their old house ten months after we sold it - I wouldnt blame the relatives, necessarily, it isnt that big a hardship. All you can do is send it back to the sender if known, which is FOC.

(Stopping the free papers being posted in the letterbox in an empty house, now that really is the greatest challenge of all.)

OP don't send it back to the solicitors just put RTS on it and put back in the post back. Royal Mail have a dept that will open the post and return to sender if they can.

I find it strange that people continue to send xmas cards when clearly they have not spoken for years, but there is little that can be done if there is not an address to reply to.

In an old house I used to get a xmas card for the neighbours opposite (wrong no. on card), the first 2 years I delivered it to them, the 3rd year I knocked on the door and asked if they could inform their friend of error, the 4th year I nearly fell down the frosty steps doing my good deed, from then on they got the card when the weather was fine or when I could be bothered which could be after xmas some years!
  • Or put them up and pretend you have more friends than you do!

    Thanks for the tip.

I can never work this one out! The previous occupiers don't receive a card so you would think they would stop sending, if this happens then you would expect the people who send the card to your address also to stop sending cards.

OP, my father bought a house from executors of a deceased person. Any letters received addressed to this person were returned marked "Return to sender, addressee deceased".

I think I would be quite sad if we stopped receiving it now....its a bit like a christmas tradition....shame I'd love them to put a return address on the envelope...I could send them a card back....it almost feels as if we are friends as its gone on so long!
