Amsterdam - what should we do on a day trip ?

As the title suggests, I have booked a day trip to Amsterdam (Xmas pressie to the OH) for March next year.

Any ideas what we should do / should go etc etc

Over to you..........
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

    as Poppy said...

mind you the canal trip I did ( a few years ago mind you) ended up with the canal boat entering the main harbour to turn around. And with some bigger barge like boats moving around it wasn't exactly smooth..:rotfl:

I didn't think much of the food in Amsterdam. Especially when I found out that what I assumed was cream on top of my apple pie was actually yoghurt:eek:

    Bit of a bump....

What is Anne Frank's house like ?

What is typical Dutch food ? We'd like to try it !

We get to Amsterdam at 08.30 and will leave the city centre at 17.00ish to get back to the airport - I want to put a little itinerary together but not sure how easy it all is to do etc

    Any advice ?

  • Anne Franks house is worth a visit but in my opinion if you have to queue a long time on a day trip you may get more enjoyment from some other activities. For me it is somewhere that is quite reflective and humbling, but i wouldn't want my whole day trip centred around it. Many will disagree though and there is a nice pancake place up the road you can eat in if you do go

Few other ideas are renting a pedalo so you can go around the canals as a fun way to really see a lot of the city in an hour or so. A walk around the red light is a definite tourist attraction that can be done at your own pace, quickly or stopping for a drink etc. There are many museums and galleries near the centre also that are definitely worth a look if you are interested in art work. Lots of museums ranging from the bizarre, like the cat museum, to the fun like the sex museum. Depends what you are looking for really?

Anne Frank's house. Some will walk around and say "oh great, an old house and some old furniture". If you don't have much of an interest in history or ww2, don't bother with it. But personally I found it quite amazing. I felt it was a fantastic way to try and understand what happened. Looking out the window, you could almost picture the Nazis marching up the road. I felt like I came away with a better understanding of an obviously very dark time. Something no book or film could convey.

Canal trip was a good way to cover a lot if ground in a short time. Trams are also useful.

If you like art, then go to the Picaso or other museums. Art is not my thing and it really was wasted on me. Most of it just looked like a mess to me. So depends on what you like really.

    Have fun!

Anne Franks house is miserable and depressing especially in the light of we all know what happened to her.
    Give it a wide berth.

Canal boat trip, you will see more of Amsterdam this way.
    The public transport is amazing.

The baguettes in Amsterdam and the cakes (0000hh the cakes) are amazing.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
