By the nature of it, it's self employed work, as sometimes you get jobs from a company and sometimes there isn't anything. They aren't going to employ you for no work, and even if they did, your face would get known in the shops.0 -
thought so, ahh well il just have to see if my partner thinks its worth it then. thanks hun x0

You'll have to do the tax anyway this year if you've done a job. Unless you work elsewhere, you won't pay tax as you'll be below the threshold. Apply for the NI exemption certificate, it's easy to do.
Even if you do earn elsewhere, there is expenses against earnings and so long as you write your fees, costs and keep records, it's not that hard to do the SA form. It's all online and does the calcs for you if you enter the amounts in time.0 -

Remember though, you only pay tax on any profit, once you've taken off travelling, expenses etc that's over the tax allowance. So if your profit is £7000 a year, you then take off your tax allowance and you'll start to pay tax. Working for RE I wouldn't have thought you'd make much profit. Unless this isn't your only job in which case you wont have a tax allowance to take off, but it is still only charged on the profit.0 -
Having just done my tax return I don't really understand why anyone gets an accountant! The only info they ask for is total income and total expenses. So if you have a spreadsheet then it's pretty much done for you. Then they calculate the tax for you!
For anyone who has another PAYE job if you do the return online before 30th Dec (bit late, I know) then you can get them to take the tax off through your PAYE job so you can spread the cost.
I also agree that your tax bill sounds incredibly high!
Not just MS'ing, I do a lot of various work and yes expenses are all taken off.
Was just far higher than I expected, just the payment of tax is slightly over the £1k threshold, also worth adding that I was working for early part of this tax year so it's not all MS.(DFW Long Haul # 240 )0
