Actually if you are buying it through finance , the finance company will want to see your licence , they run the risk of having the lorry crushed if there is no valid licence .

HGV 's dont have to be back at the operating centre every night

Lorries don't get crushed for no O licence, even if the owner is hauled in front of the TC

Any more rumours anyone wants dispelling?

Wrong. Thankyou for demonstrating your ignorance. I'll be quite happy to provide examples of why you haven't got a clue.

well excuse me for being ignorant but

one of our drivers in work got called out at 2 in the morning , drove his own car to our depot to pick up his lorry to take a pole out to be changed after some youngster pis... up to his eyeballs crashed into it

he finished that job at 6 in the morning and decided to call into his own house to pick up his flask and sandwiches for the next day

he was booked to take out a generator at 7 am for a scheduled job he was within his driving hours etc. so no problem there ( we have special rules where emergency faults occur) he agreed with his manager to finish at 9 after delivering said generator

some ar..h.. decided to call vosa and complain about the lorry parked in the street for 30 minutes

he can no longer take that lorry home at anytime of the day or night and the company had a rollocking for allowing him to do it

the reason being the lorry was not parked in it's designated parking space at night / early hours
  • With regard to 'O licenses' ,, rules are changing, you need to have an 'O' type license if you run a 7.5t or above, whether you use it for rewrd or not.
Family friends who run classic tractors, go to ploughing events ( i know, each to their own) have to pay £100 per yr to have a licence to move the tractors around on their 7.5t beavertail, if they wanted to use the truck to move cars around, they would have to pay £500.

This week i am doing my LGV CLASS2 driving course/test.
And i have to say i have had my eyes opened big time with regard to the attitude other rd users have to 'lorry drivers'.
I have only been doing it for 2 days, and i wonder how the Artic drivers cope to be honest, its bad enough driving a rigid, let alone one of them, they must hate going into towns.

With regard to safe overnight parking for drivers, we had a case here a few yrs back, driver parked o/n in the loading area of Homebase, someone set fire to his truck, he was asleep, overcome by fumes, and sadly died, can't recall whether the culprits were found though.

Everyone complains that there are to many lorries on the roads and in our towns, and yes sometimes they do have a point, but without those lorries, this country would grind to a halt big time, think i'm joking?? think back over the last couple of weeks when the 'bad weather' stopped deliveries being made in certain parts of the country, the shops soon emptied of essentials.
People soon missed the lorries then ..........

A bit contradictory ? I am confused. If you need to use the vehicle to attend an 'emergency' situation, which can happen at any time, then how can it also have to be parked in a designated place overnight?
Was there a weight limit on the street?

It has to have a designated parking space as it's a hgv

The designated parking space / location is in our depot NOT outside his house as per the operators licence

no limit on his street regards to weight restrictions

vosa stated the vehicle was NOT parked in it's designated location i.e. our depot during agreed hours

They just shook their heads saying no way should the driver have called into his own home leaving the vehicle for 30 minutes

he called in because he is diabetic and knew he would need his regular food before finishing at 9 am
  • Even more confused, if the O license says it has to be parked up in its designated place overnight, during its agreed hours(as you stated above) then how was the vehicle allowed to be used in hours when it should have been parked up?? Or was that why the company got a telling off?

I'm not 'having a go' as it were, just questioning how you need to have the vehicle parked up in accordance with relevant o license, but also need it to attend situations that may arise at all time of day.

ok my mistake saying it has to be parked in the depot during designated hours I'm sure you know what I mean ;)

I'm just saying that some scrote rang vosa complaining about the lorry being parked in the street for 30 minutes

said lorry has operators licence on it

If the lorry in the origonal topic has an operators licence . it's breaking the rules being parked overnight if it is
  • That makes sense then, i was wondering as i've never come across an O licence that states hour of use/parking before .......

Seems a bit overkill, driver should have just said he was taking part of his break .......maybe VOSA thought it was parked there all night?

As to parking up overnight - so long as its in appropriate permitted place there shouldnt be a problem (most driver do have a brain and dont want to park on a residential street - however if you run out of time - needs must!)
Where wagons are parked up and not in use - their O licence which they run on will be linked to a yard where it 'should' be stored however there are always exceptions to the rule ie recovery trucks etc. Bear in mind there is a million and one exemptions when you actually look into it and the VOSA handbook is a ream of paper full of contradictory information!
