    I don't think it'll leave you discontent

Double price will NOT double the lifespan, today's £1200 TVs are tomorrow's £600 ones.

If you check the features more modern LCD TVs upped the cycle time to 100hz to try and improve speed of response... if someone quotes you above 100hz right now I'd suggest not believing them, they all tend to be 100hz -> some combination of 100hz panels they update differently to claim anything from 200 to 600hz or Genuine 120hz which is usually for 3d and expensive

Generally if you watch TV during the day or in a bright room LCDs are recommended over plasma's (but plasma gets the edge in picture quality when watching in the dark)

    Downsides:

Even HD is lower resolution than your CRT was capable of
    Uses more electricity
Won't last as long (plan 5-8 years -a good CRT can last twice that or longer)
Doesn't stand up as well as a CRT if you throw your wii controller into the screen

A HD TV has a lower resolution than a CRT TV? :rotfl:

    - CRT TV has a resolution of 720 x 576
    - HD Ready TV has a resolution of 1366 x 720
    - FULL HD TV has a resolution of 1920 x 1080

CRT computer monitors are able to display higher resolutions (1600x1200+), but a CRT TV typically only does up to 720 x 576. If you manage to override that, it can work, but it looks awful.

The power consumption argument depends entirely on the TV size. A 42" LCD TV will use more power than a 26" CRT TV. However, a 26" LCD TV will have a lower power consumption that the equivalent CRT. The smaller the screen, the more drastically the consumption drops on LCDs.

I always fail to understand people who look back at their CRT TVs with some sort of nostalgia. CRTs are outmatched entirely compared to LCDs. It's not like with vinyl records where there is some advantage over CDs in terms of certain sound qualities/frequencies.

Is High definition TV available in Turkey, either via cable digital terrestrial broadcasting or satellite?

A 42 inch and above television showing a standard definition picture will look fairly rubbish unless you view it from a fair distance, which defeats the object of having an HD ready TV, of course you can use them with a Blu-ray player or PS3 to achieve a 1080p picture.

  • I would suggest that you go and see a LCD showing sport before you even entertain the idea of purchasing one. I have never been impressed with LCD TV's, the picture quality is far too low for me to even consider one. I still use the old school CRT TV's because the display quality is far better than any LCD that I have seen! Plus the fact that most broadcast TV is still SD (standard definition) means that buying a HD set ATM is not a good idea. HD TV's make a crap job at up scaling SD to HD screens. They look computer like and artificial.

That's before I even start on viewing angles. lmao Look at a LCD screen from the front at about 8-10 feet and then follow an arc moving further back towards the plan of the screen and watch the picture while you do it and notice the colour change, it's quite dramatic on most LCD screens. Black, which is really grey on an LCD screen, becomes purple/blue. Fine if you sit right in front of it but rubbish if you don't.

If you want a good display which displays sport well then I would look at a Plasma screen. They are less prone to LCD screens display problems such as blurring and poor black levels. Most do use quite a bit more power than LCD screens though. Pioneer made some very good plasmas before they pulled out of the plasma business. Panasonic Plasmas are okay, but some recent models are known to have some problems, recent ones degrading very quickly! Screen burn can be a problem with Plasmas.

Before purchasing a TV, I would advise that you check out opinions on the set you are interested in before purchasing on AVForums. You get the benefit of people's experiences and things to watch out for before you purchase.

I watched a skier on a mountain on an LCD screen and I laughed my bum off. Put if next to a CRT and the HD hype will die a death.

So as you might of guessed, I'm not a fan of HD screen technology. To point it bluntly.....it's a lot of hyped crap! But technology moves on so it will be needed at some point, especially when SD broadcasts start to die and HD upscaling is less of a problem.
  • get a CRT the picture quality is so much better

i dont think this counts agasint a lcd displaying HD but a LCD displaying normal tele is absolutly awful

If you get a decent LCD or plasma and sit the right distance away, then only the very best CRTs will look better than those on SD.

The mistake people make is going from their 20 inch CRTs designed to show SD, then stand one foot in front of a 50 inch TV designed to show HD and wonder why it looks fuzzy.

Viewing distance is perhaps the most important aspect of buying a new tv. If you sit too close, then the best TV in the world will look like pap.

  • CRT is best then where ever your view it from my panasonic viera LCD looks great when viewed from another room witha blind fold on i only use it on my xbox and thats where is does its business.

but for general dvds and tv the 37" CRT blows it out the water
  • I've had 50 inch Plasma Full HD @ eleven foot for over a year and before that a 42 inch Full HD on the same wall mount at the same distance and never had any problem whatsoever with the screen / distance ratio.

i tend to watch tv in slightly darkened rooms because the sun is not allowed in turkish rooms because it is always too bright and i view from 11 foot away---my wife on her sofa is at an angle to it and about 15 feet away--would hate her to kick me off my sofa as she watches her films!!

Would i be better looking for a big crt to avoid all this??
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.
