Um.. how does taking a pic of the driver prove that it was them that attacked you? There may well be trace evidence if any assault did take place but that would be there pic or not!

I am with whoever said they phone a friend with the taxi licence number when I first get in. As I don't get many taxis and when I do, it's not to go too far, I sometimes stay on the phone for the journey until I get out and can say I'm in my house, door locked and safe.

So someone will say I'm really rude being on the phone in the taxi .... but maybe I don't want random small talk with someone I don't know any more than he does?!

Have to admit I dont think I would appreciate having my photo taken by complete strangers in the Street, whatever their reasons, if they dont trust me for whatever reason, they are free to go elsewhere.

I cannot imagine a woman feeling comfortable were I to start taking snaps of them willy nilly, on the off chance they might be a bit dodgy. I am sure this would come under some kind of "voyeurism" offence, at the very least an invasion of privacy. In this new modern World of "equality", I am sure this rule swings both ways.

  • A great warning about getting !!!!ed in the first place and not being aware of one's surroundings. But I cannot see how the black cab driver, who is separated from the customer, for the driver's protection (from assault) in the first palce has porbably anything to do with the initial offence. One summises that this was not a cab in the first instance anyway.

But as to wanting to take my photo, should I be a cab driver, that is your choise, but if I was the cab driver, you would have your photo no problem. In 20 yards, I shall stop the cab, and yous get out.

The case in question was indeed a Black Cab. Either moonlighting or privately owned, is anyones guess. In general, Cabbies are a close knit society, who know one another to such a degree they can spot a cowboy cabbie a mile off, this is why a dodgy cabbie, would be hesitant to attempt to queue up at a rank, where each fare is registered and recorded, as well as noticed.

The main issue of concern, is to ensure you dont flag any old taxi driving down the road, in particular in this case, a black cab. There is no reason for a mass panic of black cabs, just to err caution as to where and how you catch one.

Too right marleyboy. Even if you are !!!!ed just get a proper booked cab and you should be safe.

Freddie you seem to be somewhat off the boil lately. You been spending too much time down the dog and duck?

Thriftymanc I'm not a taxi conniseur but I know round here if you live in a busy area they want to make sure your not jumping the que , if your neighbours have also prebooked a taxi you wouldn't be too impressed if the taxi driver said your name and then they said it was them and jumped in.

Just to add , in my area all licensed private hire cars have to have a large picture on the passenger side of their car with their company name and their liscence number on it. You cannot miss even when blind drunk that you are getting in an authorised car.

Maybe it depends on where you're from, then. Where I grew up it was standard for the taxi driver to give your surname so you knew the taxi was yours. In Manchester it seems 50/50 whether they give your name, or ask you for it. I see what you mean though about being in a busy place, hadn't thought about that - in Manchester the only time I ever use a taxi at a busy place is at an actual taxi rank so you just jump in anyway (I mean a proper taxi rank not a random street before anyone says anything!). The instances I'm talking about is when it's been fairly quiet e.g. getting picked up from someone's house rather than outside a club or something. Some taxi companies don't have their names written clearly on hence wanting to check, as the subject of the thread indicates you can never be too careful.

I dunno if it's the same across the water, but after a similar incident over here in N.Ireland, all cab's,be them private, black cab's whatever, have to display a taxi licence plate on the back & front bumper & a smaller plate in the side windows.

There is lots of good advice in this thread, the best of which is don't get drunk if you have to get yourself home.

yep same near us , plus a decal on the passenger door panel with the liscence number. Can't miss that it is your cab , only trouble is at our local asda supercentre the same private hire cabs come to collect many shoppers as they have a freefone inside. You do not want to accidently jump the que , definatly need to be careful there but not because of the drivers :rotfl:

Thrifty manc , yup i would never get in a private hire car in town , minicabs more expensive but the taxi rank very safe and in our town drivers crb checked and nvq qualified for some reassurance.
