Here is the report from the Manchester Evening News:

As Hollydays link showed there is a serious problem with both low-life pretending they are driving a taxi, and criminals who are not fit to be taxi drivers being given licenses. I don't see why anyone with a criminal conviction should get a taxi license. It's a position where it is easy to abuse people, often because they are on their own or the worse for drink.

There is lots of good advice in this thread, the best of which is don't get drunk if you have to get yourself home, though that didn't apply in this case. I have heard a few people say that they do not use taxi ranks because that is where a fight is most likely to break out.

I'm all woman. Theres nothing wrong in taking simple precautions and using common sense. If my therapist thought I was taking photos of everyone I come across in life that Don't come with references he would have me in The 'Big House' before you could say Jack Flash. I will not live my life in fear .

Spot on picasso. Take sensible precautions but there is no need to go overboard with things.

  • Every single time I get into a black cab I phone a mate and give them the taxi-driver's licence number and I don't care if the driver hears me either. Not since a pal of mine was raped in Oxford by a black-cab driver. Granted she was drunk at the time but the poor girl was traumatised, as you can probably understand. I won't be her, not ever.

Cheers for that but i cant see where they are offering advice like oopsadaisy was offering.

And it says he was in a black cab too which he must have either borrowed or got a license for..

Hi GR. I meant this MSE thread, not the news story. I agree this was either a black cab driver or someone who owns/borrowed one. I would think it is fairly likely that there will be an arrest in this case with likely cctv evidence, and the photfit. I think it would be helpful if black cabs, or even all taxis, had an id number on the door in large letters, like some US police cars have.

Oh he'll get caught ive no doubt about that. I like all taxis should do what TFL do when licensing private minicabs and have a council logo in the cab thats highly visible.

Though nothing you put in place is going to stop rogue elements from committing any sort of crime against someone else.

Ok, I withdraw all suggestions..........other than 'never go out' and 'always get your dad to pick up'.

I don't want to be mean, but,in your case,I think thats is excellent advice.
No doubt you will be a parent to never lets their kid go out, for fear of strangers lurking, and so the paranoia continues.

If you really know this person,I suggest you remove your quote as "granted she was drunk" would really not help her,if she ever read this.

i bet its all the blokes who say we're over reacting..!! nothing wrong with making simple precautions so one can play safer

A total stranger taking a picture of you is likely to cause a problem that wasnt there in the first place, and I am female too.
