What I don't get is if he is working self employed from home then it's more likely that he will be using the car much less, and in quieter commuting times. So why do they need to up the premium. Absurd and I'm not surprised the OP was annoyed.

  • Premiums vary for a number of reasons. The OP's probably went up due to him currently being unemployed. (he stated he currently has no income and is in the process of becoming self employed).

I've just done a quick check on Churchill and giving my details with my job as an engineer, my car would cost £371 per year for comprehensive cover.
If I put down unemployed in the job section the premium goes up to £452.

Wonder what it is if you put Student? As that's what my premium is based on..

£431. (But I doubt if there are too many 45 year old students!)

Just out of curiosity I put in all the same details except for the age. I made it a 20 year old student.
£1715:eek: for a 7 year old car valued at £3000. (and not even a sporty car at that. Just a 1.8 litre volvo V40)

First of all, I'm 24 not 45. You are right that I am not a student anymore

What annoyed me was the sly manner in which she took it to mean that I was self employed. When in reality I haven't officially started yet. I am in the process of starting. I am not actively doing it, all I have done really is register with the HMRC and quit my job in readiness to start. I did tell her I hadn't used the car for 2 weeks due to snow, and as someone posted above, would be using it a LOT less in future. However, she said "statistically people in this profession have been a high risk, thus we need to charge a higher premium".

Did you not read the OP - why should the OP be made to pay the change of employment charge when cancelling?

Maybe the user an clarify but I don't think they actually want to charge him for both the cancellation and the change of profession, more that they are giving him 2 options, go ahead and cancel for £70 odd or stay but you'll need to change your profession on the policy and that will cost £50 odd (presumably due to all policies costing more for the new profession rather than simply an admin fee)

Not sure. From the OP: "She says "Hold the line" then comes back and tells me I have to pay £78.60 to cancel (£25 admin and £53.60 fees). And a £57.86 charge for a change of profession."
  • If I cancel, I have to pay, if I don't cancel I have to pay. So despite her claims that she just wanted to help me stay with them. Given that the reason I was going to cancel being I couldn't afford the car, she didn't help much really
