I was thinking about moving to AOL but after reading this I think not.0

No, I haven't done as you suggested. I learned years ago to manage without other email clients.
I use AOL, Yahoo, Google and Gmail.0 -
Another one who has given up then! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Had the following from them today. A few new things to try tonight when I get home from work........
Method 1: Confirm that your e-mail server settings are correct
Whenever the AOL account is to be configured with Outlook Express. The AOL Incoming server name and Outgoing server name needs to be mentioned at the time of configuring Outlook Express with AOL.
Incoming Mail Server: IMAP.UK.AOL.COM.
Outgoing Mail Server: SMTP.UK.AOL.COM.
AOL supports outgoing access on port 25 and incoming access on port 587. Fix this by setting the SMTP port to 587 in the advanced tab of outlook express properties as it incorrectly defaults to 25.Setting the port to 587 will solve the problem.
For detailed informations on outlook and outlook express settings and configurations please visit AOL keyword: IMAP.
Method 2: Examine the configuration of your firewall software
Configure your firewall software to grant access to the Internet for the following files:
For Outlook Express: Msimn.exe
For Outlook: Outlook.exe
also
Configuring McAfee so it does NOT Block AOL
AOL needs these programs set to: "Allow Full Access" ; To function correctly AOL: waol.exe
AOL Connectivity Service (ACS): AOLacsd.exe and acsd.exe
AOL Companion: companion.exe
AOL Dialler: AOLDialer.exe
TopSpeed Web Acceleration Technology: aolwbspd.exe
AOL Tray Icon: AOLTray.exe
AOL Internet Access Controls: spcauth.exe
AOL Embedded Media Player: AOLMediaPlaybackControl.exe
You've Got Pictures Screensaver: ygpsstra.exe
AOL Coach Player: AOlNySEV.exe
Real Media Player: realplay.exe
QuickTime Software Suite: qttask.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe and QuickTimeUpdater.exe
Right click the McAfee Firewall icon in the systray > Select 'Options'
> Select 'Internet Applications' > Select the AOL programs in the list >click Allow Full Access Repeat for all 4 AOL Programs
Method 3: Check your antivirus vendor's Web site for additional suggestions
If your antivirus solution includes an e-mail scanning feature, you may have to do additional configuration to use Outlook or Outlook Express with the antivirus e-mail scanning feature.
Antivirus software that has been known to cause this problem includes products by the following vendors:
Symantec (Norton) >>
McAfee: >>
Trend Micro: >>
Panda: >>
Method 4: Verify the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size that is set on your router
The AOL network runs at an MTU of 1400. Many routers have inbuilt auto-configurations where the hardware identifies that the AOL traffic has an MTU of 1400 and dynamically adjusts. Alternatively you may have to manually change the MTU setting on the modem router. If the router hardware does not have this facility, the MTU setting can manually be changed on the computer to 1400.
You can read your AOL email through your favourite email application. As long as your email application supports IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) you should be able to read and send email from software such as Microsoft Outlook or Netscape.
To get Setup instructions for the most common email applications please visit AOL Keyword: IMAP. You will get detailed setup instructions for your
Microsoft Outlook Express
Microsoft Outlook on Windows 2000, ME or 98
Microsoft Outlook on Windows XP
If you use an email application not listed here and you are reasonably technically confident, you should be able to configure your email application yourself in a few minutes - just read the information for Other Email Applications.
Please note that AOL Member Services is unable to provide detailed support for these applications as they were developed by third parties.
AOL email with other email applications
The basic setup for access to the AOL IMAP servers is fairly simple and is common to all the applications. For detailed instructions on how to set up Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express please see AOL Keyword: IMAP.
Incoming email server address: imap.uk.aol.com
Outgoing email server address: smtp.uk.aol.com
The incoming email server is an IMAP server. You will have to ensure that your email application supports the IMAP protocol and will have to select IMAP (not POP3 or HTTP) at some point during the setup process.
The smtp server requires authentication - this means that in order to send an email you must log in with a user name or password to the smtp server. The user name and password are the same as your AOL Screen Name and AOL password.
Please note the following AOL email features are not available:
--There is no Recently Deleted Email folder. Email is marked ready to be deleted in the Inbox or Sent Items folders and then deleted by the AOL IMAP servers every night. Some applications show deleted email in the original folder with the deletion flagged (such as Outlook or Eudora), while other applications do not show these emails.
-- You will not be able to check the status of, or unsend email to, other AOL members using IMAP.
-- The Report Spam Feature is not available.
-- AOL IMAP servers do not allow folders to be created or deleted in the root folder. You will see an Inbox, Sent Items, Saved, Spam and Voicemail folder. The Voicemail folder cannot be accessed and should be ignored.
-- You cannot manually add messages to the Inbox or Sent Items folders. Messages will only be added to these folders when an email is received or sent by the AOL IMAP server.0 -
BarmyBubba wrote:I recently joined AOL Broadband. This was after being assured that I would still be able to send 3rd party emails through Outlook Express by using thier smtp address.
I have a number of other email addresses that I still need the use of for work etc and whilst I can accept emails, I am having no luck in sending them.
I have gone in live chat with the supposed live technical helpers and they have just filled me with lies. I have sent emails which have been of no help. I have followed all instructions they have sent but still no good.
Anyone else had this problem? If so did you manage to resolve it?
I sent them a email yesterday threatening to cancel my direct debit and contract as they aint fulfilling the promises they made. Hopefully this will bring a positive resolution to it. But any advice would be excellent.
I haven't tried with OE but I have thunderbird set up and working perfectly.
The settings are
server name smtp.aol.com port 587
I have use username and password ticked and in these I have my aol username and input password if asked0 -
Just made a discovery today - whilst trying to discover how to copy old outlook express data from old pc to this I found that as well as Microsoft Outlook I have Outlook Express 6 on this PC.
I entered mail and input and outgoing server names for old isp address and voila I can send mail as well as receive. Didn't bother looking at what port numbers are set to, didn't tick outging server requires auth.
So that's a bonus. Now back to attempting to transfer mail.
Update : seems a bit hit and miss - not something to rely on. I think it will send small mail at quiet times, but otherwise timing out/terminating. So apologies for waking this thread up again.0 -
I have it set up via Outlook and it works well, someone at AOL did do a work through on how to set it up but I am at work right now so don't have access to it.... I shall post the link laters though!0
