The court hasnt sent him a discharge letter, so he cant get a bank account. Trouble is, he's got a £50 cheque from New Vista (survey site) and no way to cash it! I have bank accounts, but none of them are joint. What can he do???

has he not opened a barclays basic account or a Co-op account
Both will allow him to pay cheques in.
He can do this without a court letter. The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter

Or talk to the OR/court to get confirmation.
However, as said, a basic Barclays or Coop account should be available without. You're unlikley to get a full current account even with confirmation of discharge, so a basic account is probably a good bet anyway. They are for most practical purposes as good as a full account anyway.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

The court do not send you confirmation of discharge, and if you do get one from the court it will cost you about £60.:pB&SC No. 298

They are £2 each for paper copies. Some people have used the online one's and have said the information was very poor compared to the paper copies.

thanks for the replies. he's tried twice with tsb to open a basic account but was denied. we read in the court papers that a discharge letter costs £60, which we really cant afford right now. i didnt know he might be able to get it for free. how would he go about finding out?
i expect his credit is shot to pieces, BUT he did open a Great Universal catalogue account this year, to try and restore his score. He bought a few things and paid them off immediately. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all

Right....
A) Get him to ring the Co-op and open a Cashminder account. Internet banking, DD's & SO's, phone banking, use the Post Office to deposit any money. Or go in branch to Barclays to open a Cash account.
Contact his old OR's office and ask for a letter to confirm he has been discharged.
C) Follow the Credit File Clean Up as posted by IfWishes.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
he can open an account over the phone/internet??? we assumed it'd have to be done in person.
