thanks for the replies. yes, hubby only asked for a basic account and he was upfront about his bankruptcy, as he always is.

but what can he do about this cheque he has? how long are cheques valid for?

How long is a piece of string?

It will very much depend on wheter the companies play ball and do as they should. Could take a 2,3,6,12 months.

Phone the Co-op and ask to open a Cashminder account and see what they say. You don't ever need to go in branch as you can deposit cash/cheques in through the Post Office. 08457 212 212

  • I have an account with barclays and I am still bankrupt (less than a year) it is a basic account and very restricted (no overdraft, online telephone banking etc) but you get a debit card that you can use at ATMs, shops as long as you have money in your account to cover costs, I have paid in cheques and crossed postal orders with it? so I dont understand why they are refusing your husband a basic account? cant your husband also sign the cheque over to you so that you can pay it into your account? i know you used to be able to do this years ago but no idea if you can still do this now< maybe someone can verify this?

that would be fantastic, but i have no idea if we can do it, or how to do it. its a printed cheque from New Vista, survey site. not a hand written cheque, i hope that wont make a difference

If the cheque has Account Payee on it (and most cheque books come with it pre-printed) then it can't be signed over.
