asda ripped off

Went shopping in my local asda last night, as everyone knows it gets stressful at the checkout when your on your own and they start to scan items ready for you to pack whilst your at the other end still loading the conveyor belt up.
basically i paid part cash £50.00 and put the rest on my card just went into auto pilot pin in the macine and off i go!
this morning i went to do the pricechecker and then seen what he had done!!.... he put in the amount that i paid cash of £5.00 not the £50.00 and charged me the rest all on my card :( my heart sank caus payday isnt till the 15th and im skint at this time of the month anyway.
i went in at 8.00am this morning to report it straight away , they said they will do a till check.. waiting all day for them to ring i finally rang them an spoken with the checkout manager who told me basically the till was "bang on" (his words exactly).
he then said now an investigation would go ahead as they have CCTV cameras.. i felt relived caus then at least they could see that i gave him 5 tenner s!! not a fiver!... waited a few hours an nothing again so i went in... to be told that they checked the footage and no cctv camera was on the till i was at whilst i was loading, packing and paying for my shopping!!! omg im gutted i feel so ripped off.. i know yeah i should of checked the amount before i put my pin in but i didn't doesn't stop me from feeling upset. cant believe it, is there anything more i can do?
i dont go to work all month just to suddenly be out of pocket when i have a family to support.
feel so disheartened :(

  • Difficult one. If they say that the till was correct when it was cashed up and didn't have a £45 surplus then obviously it's difficult for you to prove otherwise.

The CCTV was probably always going to be a non-starter unless a camera was focussed on that specific till and zoomed in. A camera covering a few checkouts positioned up in the rafters was never going to have the resolution to pick up what denomination of notes was handed to the cashier.

Have you spoken to the store manager at all or have you just been dealing with the checkout supervisor? If not I'd suggest going to the store manager tomorrow.

Possibly Asda's customer services department? They tend to have a lot of clout these days. The customer services department of the bookmakers I work for is always ringing round shops and instructing staff to give discretionary payments to customers who dispute something even when the customer is in the wrong.

(By that I'm not implying you're in the wrong in this case of course.) :)

thanks for the reply i feel to dishartend to even step back into that store again, i feel like the bad one even though im teh one out of pocket. i may just write to the manager wouldn't wanna have anyone see my cry in public again (from frustration )
  • Might help though if you do burst into tears - what man wants an emotional woman crying in public and saying that they have ripped you off!

I would also ask for another till check or details on the till check in your letter.

    Hugs

So whoever was on the till put in £5.00 instead of £50.00, seems funny that the till matches, maybe the cashier has pocketed the difference, i would send a strong letter to head office and ask for a full investigation, you might get the money back, it can't hurt to try.!! But always check whats come off the bill if you've paid part cash. And always mark your notes with something in the corner, so if you have to go back, there is some sort of proof, and before anyone moans about defacing the queens money, tough!! Its to stop this sort of thing happening.
  • Another till check is impossible unfortunately Lily. The cash in the float would have been counted when the till was cashed-up on the day and was apparently correct with no surplus showing. That till would then be 're floated' with the normal amount for the next day, lets say £50 in coins and notes.

For want of a better word the float that should have been wrong that day doesn't exist any more.

Personally I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect most people carry a pen and mark every note they come into contact with during their day to day lives. Presumably this is what you do and if so then good for you, but most normal people are not going to do this.

At best it would be a bit extreme, at worst it's obsessive-compulsive. :)

I would go to the police, let the manager and Asda head office know first though.

I'd try the police again, tell them that as the till was correct you can only assume the the check out operator stole your cash and you want it investigated. Tell them that it would be ridiculous to spend just £5 in cash and the rest on credit card. Make sure you tell Asda first though as it may make them investigate harder.
