Praise for Tesco but never again with Sainsbury’s!

I usually use Tesco for my weekly online shop. Not really had any problems with them. This week I did my shop as usual, then received a free delivery code for Sainsburys. I’ve never used them before so I thought I’d give them a go as I was getting delivery free. Pricewise they were very similar & I’ve been led to believe Sainsburys are much better quality than Tesco, so I had nothing to lose really.

Delivery with Sainsburys was booked for 10-11am yesterday morning. Arrived about 10:35. Pretty much on par with the £65 guide price, couple of substitutions etc, but all in all ok. Wasn’t til after they’d gone, I realised that in fact a lot of the dates were rubbish, with some having todays date on. They weren’t highlighted to me on delivery as they would be with Tesco. I called them to complain & advised it was the first AND last online order I’d be doing with them. 9 minutes later the call ended with me being a refund for the 3 items I was particularly unhappy with, in the form of e-vouchers to use against my next online grocery shop with them……….!! :o

Anyway 15 minutes later a Tesco van pulls up outside. Oooops! I’d forgotten to cancel the order! I ran out & told the delivery guy I thought I’d cancelled it & he said no problem, he’d return it to store & they’d refund it which seemed terribly straightforward for a customer balls up! Anyway this morning I called customer services to check if it had been processed ok, & the nice gentleman said he’d ring the store & call me back. Less than 5 mins later, he was on the phone saying the manager at my dispatch store had just processed my full refund (of £65!) back to my card!

I shall be sticking with Tesco in future. Their products are better, they organise substitutions at their own cost, they tell you when a product has a short date on it, & most of all they’re ridiculously understanding! :T

  • Wow, that WAS good of Tesco. I agree - they are the best. Sainsburys won't even deliver to me because of having to climb two flights of stairs to my flat - it is against their terms for Health and Safety. Asda and Tesco deliver with no complaint.
  • I was astounded to be honest. It was all just too straight forward considering it was me who had messed up!

  • I've only used Sainsburys once and will also never use them again. It was during the hot days of summer (remember them?!). The usual delivery van had broken down and they brought the shopping in the back of a normal transit van, the crates just being piled on top of each other. Well the bread had gone mouldy, the milk went off two days after it arrived despite being in my fridge, a cake and packet of cream crackers were squashed and my eggs were all broken. I rang their customer services and was told that I shold have checked the items as they arrived and managed to get free delivery off my next order which I never used.

I've used Tesco no end of times since then and have never had a bad experience!

  • Even better. Just checked my bank account this morning. And i've been refunded more than I paid. £65.47 left my account, & £73.95 has been refunded. God, I love Tesco! :p

I have used both Tesco & Sainsburys delivery and my experience has been that Tesco were dreadful, they regularly sent the wrong items, if they substituted items they would always (& I mean every single time) put in a higher priced item, sometimes even several pounds per item more expensive and just charge it to my card!

After the 3rd or 4th pitiful delivery service I rang the store manager to complain but he couldn't have been less interested if he had tried. Eventually I got through to a big-nob at head office who after a week of phone calls agreed to refund the delivery charge  and offered us £10 compensation for the inconvenience.

This inconvenience included not receiving a turkey a couple of days before christmas because "they were running low", so they just decided to exclude it!! That led to some frantic running around on xmas eve to get a turkey.

Sainsburys, on the other hand have been great for me, never had any items missing, anything not in stock was either replaced with a similar priced item or left out at our request.

I just thought it was worth mentioning that just because a couple of people highlight a problem with Sainsburys that they are not always that bad and that Tesco are just as bad, if not worse.
    :)
  • Regularly do Sainsbury's deliveries on behalf of my Mum. Never any problems. We always select No Substitutions on all the items, as my Mum doesn't have money to throw around on 'Taste the Difference' when she really wanted 'Basics', so if they don't have the item they don't send it, however it's very rare that the order isn't complete.

The only problems that do occur are my mistakes in operating the website, as shopping online is much harder than instore. As she would normally go and pick up "a medium jar of coffee" but online we have to know that it's "Sainsbury's Full Roast Decaffinated 500g".. so she's ended up with a few things way bigger or way smaller than she'd hoped for!

I have never had problems with Tesco deliveries but Sainsbury's are awful with customer service, try getting hold of them if all is not right is a nightmare :(.
That days dates, short dates, items that should only have been on display until the day prior to delivery.....

Luckily it is a free phone number as I sit on hold for over ten minutes and then get cut off, tried again same thing. Emailed - no reply. Emailed three days later - no reply. Again on the phone for over ten minutes, got though to an operator told them my issues asked to hold and got cut off. Phone again waited over ten minutes and then had the issues addressed. They wanted to give me a e voucher instead of refund I said no, so had to wait while I was put through to another department for the refund.
Was sent a £10 e voucher as a sorry, went to use it on another small order, the voucher showed as a reduction on the total but was billed the full amount
The other day received a free delivery voucher so I used that and the £10 voucher (which did get deducted this time) to order a few bits that I planned to get from Tesco just to use up the vouchers and not have to shop at Sainsbury's on line again.
So I will stick to Tesco and Waitrose for my deliveries.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • I suppose it will generally depend on your area, & the people doing your shop :) But for me, Tesco all the way!

  • Just wondering why Ocado almost never gets mentioned on these threads about home shopping.

I use them regularly and never have a problem - only once that I can remember has something been out of stock, and best of all they show minimum date lengths on their website so you know no short dating.

Oh, and they price match Tesco now.

(and no, I don't work for them :))
