Praise for Tesco but never again with Sainsbury’s!

  • I actually looked at Ocado the other day. And while they claim to price match Tesco, they had items on their site that I had in my basket on Tesco for less. I also find their website difficult to navigate. Thats my reason anyway. :)

  • Purely for the sake of balance I have had some pretty bad experiences with Tesco online grocery. The worst was when I had booked a slot between 9pm - 11pm. After it had gone 11pm & there was still no sign of my shopping it was pretty evident it was not going to make an appearance so I decided to give customer services a ring. Unfortunately it was not possible to call after 11pm so I had to wait until the following day. In the morning after being left on hold & transferred several times I had to abandon my lengthy call to go to uni without any explanation. Eventually, in ther afternoon, I received a call from the store explaining that a driver had failed to appear the previous night & they had been unable to fulfil a number of the orders. I was then asked rather bluntly 'do you still want your shopping?' but offered no apologies. At least with Sainsbury's if they arrive outwith the hour long delivery slot you are compensated £10. Personally I find Tesco's 2 hour long slots far less convenient. Basically it seems that quality of service is as dependent on the specific stores as much as the larger company.

I usually use Tesco for my weekly online shop. Not really had any problems with them. This week I did my shop as usual, then received a free delivery code for Sainsburys. I’ve never used them before so I thought I’d give them a go as I was getting delivery free. Pricewise they were very similar & I’ve been led to believe Sainsburys are much better quality than Tesco, so I had nothing to lose really.

Delivery with Sainsburys was booked for 10-11am yesterday morning. Arrived about 10:35. Pretty much on par with the £65 guide price, couple of substitutions etc, but all in all ok. Wasn’t til after they’d gone, I realised that in fact a lot of the dates were rubbish, with some having todays date on. They weren’t highlighted to me on delivery as they would be with Tesco. I called them to complain & advised it was the first AND last online order I’d be doing with them. 9 minutes later the call ended with me being a refund for the 3 items I was particularly unhappy with, in the form of e-vouchers to use against my next online grocery shop with them……….!! :o

Anyway 15 minutes later a Tesco van pulls up outside. Oooops! I’d forgotten to cancel the order! I ran out & told the delivery guy I thought I’d cancelled it & he said no problem, he’d return it to store & they’d refund it which seemed terribly straightforward for a customer balls up! Anyway this morning I called customer services to check if it had been processed ok, & the nice gentleman said he’d ring the store & call me back. Less than 5 mins later, he was on the phone saying the manager at my dispatch store had just processed my full refund (of £65!) back to my card!

I shall be sticking with Tesco in future. Their products are better, they organise substitutions at their own cost, they tell you when a product has a short date on it, & most of all they’re ridiculously understanding! :T

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with Sainsburys online shopping. You mentioned that the dates were rubbish. Regarding short dates on your products, it is the policy with Sainsburys that they will select products that have at least a three day code, if your choice is not available they will select an alternative product and inform you of that fact.

I know this is an old thread, but I agree.

Tesco used to be great, but their service in my area took a nose dive. I've made a thread about my three or four terrible deliveries in a row.

I changed to sainsburys, and it's all been fine so far. The prices are about the same, but I've noticed that the quality of the 'taste the difference' stuff isnt anywhere near as good as Tesco finest.

However, sainsburys does have a lot more selection, and their site tells you how big a pizza is, whereas tesco only tells you the weight - not much use when I'm trying to work out what pizza will be right for two people.

It's just things like that. I do like that Tesco has an option on their site to automatically buy all the ingredients in one of their recipes while sainsburys doesn't so you have to manually order them yourself.

    Swings and roundabouts.

There was a missing item on my home delivery. I e-mailed Sainsbury's. They gave me a voucher code for a refund off my next delivery. Why should I have to make another order to get my refund? It was their mistake not mine. I wrote back and asked them to credit it to my account as other supermarkets do. No! they couldn't do that for security reasons. I would have phone to get that done. Since I am partially deaf, I didn't want to do that. I asked for a voucher to use in-store. No! to that too. Their customer service is dreadful for online shopping. In-store they are fine. Won't be having grocery delivery from Sainsbury's again.

I trust you have informed Tesco that they have refunded too much?

If I forgot to cancel one of the shops, I think i'd take it in a use it - rather than sending the driver away.
