PARABLIC Halogen Heaters = BEST but where 2 buy ?

hello all,

I have been testing out some halogen heaters, and it seems the PARABOLIC designs are at least 2-300% as effective

I have one of these, purchased from Maplins about 2 years ago, branded NIKKAI with 2 power settings

I compared it to a standard flat upright type.

the results were;

on the 350w setting, the parabolic design was HOTTER than the flat type on 800w setting

both were tested on a mains wattage meter for accurate power consumption

the parabolic at 350w gave off at least twice the heat than the standard 800w panel

at 700w the parabolic was too hot to sit near too.... seems a lot of heat is being lost be the flat panel designs, whereas the parabolic bounces the rear heat forward, thus far more effective, in my experience easily twice as effective

QUERY oddly, it seems these are impossible to find in the UK now ?

why are these not popular in the UK ?

seems a missed oppurtunity, the parabolics really work far more effectively which equals less power consumption

does anyone know where to buy these in UK ?

    I am sorry to curb your enthusiasm, but both types have exactly the same efficiency - which is 100%.

    All types of electrical heating from Granny's old 1/2/3/ bar fire to the most sophisticated electrical heating system* give out exactly the same amount of heat for the power(kW). So in money terms for any given cost(i.e. kWh) they all give out exactly the same heat.

    I suggest what is happening is that the parabolic design concentrates a 'beam' of heat toward an object, rather than a wider distribution of heat from the 'flat' type. A good analogy is that a 200w electric paint stripper directs all the heat to one point and produces enough heat to melt paint.

    * exclude heat pumps.
  • yes agree, but the parabolic design is more effective, for the purposes of heating the individual

    for me, I use it if Im the computer room, where I will want instant direct heat, for maybe an hour or 2,

    these halogen designs are really direct heaters, so the fact the parabolic one feels just as hot ( hotter actually ) at 50% of the power rating of the flat type, makes them far more effective / efficient in real terms

    unless of course people are using the halogens to heat up the rooms, in which case they are pretty much ineffective and a waste of power and time, I find a 2kw fan heater will heat a room in 10mins, u would be waiting all week for a halogen to do the same

    That's because you are (apparently) comparing a 2kw fan heater with an 800W halogen. The former produces 2.5 times as much heat, so of course it will heat the room quicker. It's the output-nothing to do with the shape!
