What temperature should your thermostat be at?

My house is a complete mess with undersized rads (for -10c weather anyway) in some rooms and not in others (with TRV's)
I'd estimate that my rads can dump around 20KW of heat, whereas the boiler can output 29KW. It's a Potterton Profile so no modulating burner. So I get boiler cycling even when the thermostat is calling for heat.

Even though the wide, long hall in this house is fairly warm (about 4KW output feeding it!) - why is the thermostat in what would often be a cool unoccupied space?

Thats the way lozzaman. Lets be confident. When the milder weather comes. Probably about May.:)

Feels like the ice age has started here up north.

    Heres hoping.

Meant to be warmer this weekend - but then damn cold into January again.
We're getting a slight thaw here today. Had a couple of calls about burst pipes already!

yes it will. If you have a combi boiler turn it on full & make sure the pressure is around 1.5 bar

Need to watch the return temperatures don't climb too high if it is a condensing boiler as it'll no longer condense. If you can't hold the return pipe for say 10 seconds it's probably a little too warm for condensing.
Depending on the output of your radiators you might need the water temperature to be that hot when it's well below zero outside.
  • We are doing betwwen 12-15 kwh per day just to keep it reasonable.

think i will have to sell one of the kids to pay the gas bill.

Now you go mention frozen pipes. Something else to worry about.
  • My son's room has a temperature monitor in, & that regularly drops to 17 & his temperature alarm goes off.

Our lounge/diner is approx 23ft Long x 15.5ft wide x 7.5ft high. There are 2 radiators in it, one almost 6ft, the other 6.5ft. The whole bottom wall is more or less patio door.

If I could get my usage down to 10x what you're using I'll be doing well. 200KWh a day at least at the moment. Working from home doesn't help.
The temperature of our incoming mains doesn't seem too bad, well above freezing.
  • During the last fortnight. Our sons (3) room is apox 14.00 in the morning and the kitcen is about 11.00.

Give the heating a blast at 6.00 and it comes back to reasonable levels.

I ant to live somewhere warmer.

I'm going to have to get a setback thermostat. I woke up the other night at about 3am and went downstairs. Hallway was sitting at 12c, which I guess wasn't too bad considering it was -11c outside. My bedroom was still around 17.5c. I too have heating coming on at 6am, hot water at 6:30am (have to delay the hot water, otherwise the heating gets boosted by making my hot water cold!)

Wonder if the energy companies will pull the "selling gas at a loss" and then announcing record profits helped by a cold winter?

I'd also love to move to somewhere warm all year round.
  • Sorry i am thick.

    12-15 * 11.5

    130 - 180

    DOOO

    Thick Goerdie.

That is VERY low. ABout 75 pence, doubt you would have to sell your kids for that usage!
    Surely you mean 12-15 units?
