This happened when I was calling my BF. When he phoned Orange they found there was a 3g issue in the area he was usually in. He switched off 3g and hey presto it worked. After a while he turned it back on and it worked fine, the fauly must have been fixed by then.

Lesson being, phone orange and see if there's any problems in your area. :D
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

I have exactly the same problem. I work in Cardiff city centre and many of the calls go straight to voicemail or it just rings for a while for the caller, but I don't hear anything in my end. This is where I have full signal - 4 bars in my mobile. I dont think there is a problem with the phone as it works fine at home. 3G might be causing this problem as I have it switched on always to check my mails. Is there any other way other than switching 3G off?

this happened to me and my boyf today - we both have Blackberrys on Orange. I called him this afternoon, it rang and rang then went to voicemail. He then called me back but my phone didn't even ring, then I got a text saying I had a missed call from him!!

This seems to be happening more and more!

It's a combination of network congestion and the fact that most phones these days are smartphones and a lot of people now have email on their phones. If you have email set up wrong on the phone it can cause the data connection to stick, which in turn can prevent calls from coming through - this is more prevalent in 2G as data prioritises over a voice call, hence going straight to voicemail. If you have push email set up and it isn't "life and death" to have immediate email, then turn the push feature off and set the phone to "pull" the emails every 15/30/60 mins etc. This will ensure the data connection closes and your calls will then come through OK.

Also, don't have push mail set up unless your email provider supports it (which isn't many providers) as it won't work and it sticks the data connection.

Take this from someone who knows, as I deal with these issues every day! :o
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
