    a. The date of your lightbulb moment

    February 2007

    b. Debts at their highest

    £41,549

    c. Debt-Free Date

    Today – 30 April 2012

    d. Your one pearl of wisdom.

    Budget J

I used to look at my bank balance at the beginning of each month and think “great, let’s get spending”. I never stopped to work out how much I had left after all the bills and other outgoings, so I set up a simple spreadsheet to keep track. That left me with the"real" amount I had spare and I finally started living within my means.

    e. And if you had a debt diary on DFW, a link to it

I didn’t have a debt diary myself, but have followed lots of other diaries on here since 2007. Special mention for Hypno06 – a truly inspirational person to whom I will be eternally grateful for sharing her story on here. Thank you.

Also thanks to Martin for creating this site - it's been a lifesaver. Debt free for the first time since 1999! Woop!

Hey, no need to thank me - I'm just one person on an amazing site that allows people like you and I to tackle things that, at one point, seemed the most untackleable things ever!

I'm really pleased to read that you are debt free - welcome to the rest of your life :T:T:T

Pearl of Wisdom: So many things I've learnt from this site. Don't think you're weak or a failure because you're in debt. Plenty of people are but don't admit it. Share your problems with your partner (I didn't initially but people on here encouraged and supported me to make it easier to be able to tell him). Take on some of the challenges, budget, follow the OS forum but most of all don't ignore the debt - it won't go away until you challenge it. Do whatever works for you - for me it was a dmp through Payplan - who have been fantastic.

Pearl of wisdom: join as many challenges as you can, the motivation and inspiration you get from everyone is fantastic and I honestly couldn't have done it without the support on the debt free wannabe threads. Also, any payment, however small, counts.

Now I'm going after the mortgage!!:D
