Date of light bulb moment: December 2009

    Debts at their highest: 32000

    Debt-Free Date: 17th February 2012

Pearl of wisdom: I was totally 100% aware and in control of my actions when misusing my credit cards and requesting loan increases. It was easy money, and fast. A huge debt was built up in no time at all without noticing the cliff that would need to be conquered later on. My advice is simple - any time you want to borrow money think hard about whether you really need it. Is the product or service essential? If the answer is no, I guarantee you will feel worse in the struggle to pay it back than whatever short lived joy the borrowing bought. And for a much longer period of time.

DFW debt diary: My light bulb post

    Congratulations! :D

  • a. The date of your lightbulb moment - May 2005
    b. Debts at their highest - just over £40k
    c. Debt-Free Date - 22/03/2012 :j
    d. Your one pearl of wisdom - keep a spreadsheet detailing all of your debts and how long they will take to clear. This motivated me to scrimp and save to make extra payments when I could, hence why I have now made my last payment to my DMP, a full two years before the debt free date originally given to me by the CCCS.

  • Lightbulb moment. well there wasn't one. I knew my ex husband was spending beyond our means, but was powerless to stop him. Finally ended the marriage 1993 and left with two kids and all his debt (he did a runner to america and as the divorce hadn't come through the nabbed me as joint and severally liable, even though the loans were in his name only and I didn't even know about them.

Left with 2 kids a mortgage and a wage of 14.5k.
weekly income after bills was initially £50 which I had to feed, clothe and live on.at the time was £5 over the limit to receive any benefits so was well and truly screwed.

    debts at highest 18k
Went to cab had cc interest frozen
    Finally debt free Jan 2012
Took so long because both my children needed supporting through university,
Can't believe I have finally reached the point where I can actually start saving .The relief is immense
19 years it took me to get out of that hole. not one default or ccj in that time. Wish mse had been around back then, might not have taken so long
