I really liked weebly.com for building a website. no ads on the free version.

This was Sing Bingo...didn't have to make deposit to get £10 bonus money.

You do have to make an initial deposit before you can withdraw any winnings though, I deposited £5 and withdrew £100.

Just the luck of the draw though......on another day I could have won nothing.

Took me about 20 mins to win nothing haha, oh well :)

Well done SandP, a terrific win! By the way what are the "slots"?

Sorry by slots I mean fruit machine/instant win style games such as Zuma. I think on Sing the one I won on was Cupids Arrow.

evening all, another £20 to add for me today as we sold a wii game on amazon. I conpletly forgot about them with the move so that was a welcome bonus. Also found out im going to have to sell my car, we are in cyprus at the moment and was going to ship it out here after my dad got a new car. Well dad got his new car and when we rung to sort the car they said they werent taking any unless we wanted it dumping in the sea. And we wouldnt get insurance for it at the moment. So we decided rather than leave it sat on dads drive for another 2 and a half years we may as well sell it and put the money in the bank, maybe use some to get a better car to see us through. On another plus side i wont ever have had that money in the bank before and once sold it will significantly contribute to this challenge.

Hope everyones having a good day.
back to comping in 2017, fingers crossed
  • Oh my word.

I introduced myself last week saying I was going to quit my job on Friday to become a self-employed genealogist - and I did. I feel *way* better for doing it. This week I've been working on my new website and getting everything set up for a launch on Monday 14th (hopefully, waiting on my new logo being finished by a designer!). Anyway, I was thinking today that my signature looked really lame (£15.25/£11,000 between 04MAR2011-31DEC2011) and I wondered just how much I might have saved by quitting my job.

You see, my job as a software trainer used to take me all over the UK and involved frequent overseas trips. In 2010 on top of 4 trips to the US, I also travelled to Vienna, Moscow, Manama in Bahrain, Mexico City, Vancouver, and Athens for work. Which sounds great and was occasionally really amazing. The reality is though that I travelled nearly 1/2 of the year the last three years and last year I spent over 400 hrs just travelling - ie. that's just the time I was on a train, on a plane, waiting in airports etc. It's a good job I always have a book in my bag!

Most of the upfront costs for the job (plane fares and hotels for example) were covered by the company. BUT, and it is a really big BUT, there were hidden costs.

I spent a fortune on travel sized contact lens solution/deodorant/toothpaste etc to get through airport security. Because my constant motion was hard on my stuff I replaced my boots and rucksacks every six weeks, bought freakish amounts of socks and replaced my coat twice a year. Because I was always in a rush or carrying luggage I used buses most days I was office based rather than walking. Because the travel and odd food choices in airports etc was hard on my body I used loads of cold and tension headache medicines and bought protein powder to top up my diet on the busiest days. I spent about £1200 on my BlackBerry bills last year because of the random places I was using it and the amount of time I used it. I even worked out a very low estimate of how much I spent each month on buying random energy bars, magazines, bottles of water, coffees and things for lunch.

Today I worked out all my costs for the above, went back over the figures to check prices for stuff and then checked again because the figure was so high. It's right. I've checked it three times now and it's a conservative estimate.

    *drumroll*

I am going to save £1832.56 in the next 12 months just because I am not doing that job any more. I'm definitely counting it towards my make £11,000 goal because I'm saving it as a result of a decision I made which I think is in the spirit of the challenge. I knew my 'lifestyle' was extreme because of my unusual job but I'm slightly stunned that my job could be costing me so much in incidental costs!

There's other reasons I quit but wow, that's one right there.

Minnie your things may do better when its not free listing as it does get really saturated with stuff at those times. worth considering?
Also what can you do in the meantime? maybe set a mini challenge to either make or save a pound a day for the next 7 days. we did this a couple of times last year and people came up with many different ways of doing it. you would then have more than doubled your £5 this month. more than a 100% improvement.
    Good luck
