No, you do not have to sit with him. I would go so far as to say that it would be hypocrisy to do this, feeling as you do. Personally, I would take this as the opportunity to turn up at his meal and say "I am going home to recover some of the hours you have ripped me off by" and go home. I think he needs to know that his wretched christmas meal is not adequate compensation for the wasted hours.

We had decided that we wouldn't go at all, but when my husband announced this yesterday he was told that £120 would be deducted from his December pay to cover it, which we simply cannot afford just before Christmas. And, it's not local, so the staff have arranged a minibus to take everyone there and bring us back (it's 30 miles away), so it's not like we can just up and leave when we want to. A female colleague is also badly treated, so her partner isn't going on principle (because he doesn't want to sit with this man either) and she's been told she has to take someone else or she will have to pay £60! I've asked my husband if he would take someone else because I really don't want to go, but so far no-one wants to go.

No, they're not in a union, although it has been suggested in the past. Maybe time to rethink! My employer's bank holiday policy is rough too, and we are in the union but there's nothing that can be done. How they work it is they divide your weekly hours by 5, so if you work 25 hours per week they allow you 5 hours for bank holidays. If you work, as I do, for 8 hours on a Monday I fall short of the BH allowance by 3 hours so owe my employers 3 hours for every BH!! For me, it adds up to the equivalent of 2 days per year that I owe for BH's, others owe more than that, but what gripes almost everyone is that those who have Mondays off gain, and one member of staff here actually gains the equivalent of another week during the year which can be taken as leave!!

If the company is not unionised then it will be throwing money down the drain as well as been stressful trying to get a union rep to acknowledge that you exist as one of their members. Unions are just not worth the money, time and stress.

Make sure that your household insurance is up to day and that you are covered for legal fees. Unions are a dead loss.

Go. Put a huge amount of laxatives in his food. Serve the nasty little toad right. I think taking the money for it out of wages would be an unlawful deduction but I'm sure SarEl would know.

It would be very very tempting for him to be ganged up on at this meal. If there is a minibus for everyone including him I'd make sure he missed it for the return journey. I'd also probably strip him and tie him to a lampost to freeze to death too but that might be taking things too far :D

Nice idea!! love it!! He won't be travelling on the minibus, thankfully, so we can't leave him behind. He's probably getting a taxi because as the director/owner of the company he is very very wealthy, which is fair enough, don't begrudge that. Besides, his wife wouldn't lower herself to get on a minibus!!! She'll just want to sit with him, as always, looking down her nose at his 'minions'. In 5 years, therefore 5 Christmas 'do's', she's never spoken a word to any of the partners of the employees. We are simply not good enough. I really like the laxative idea ... hey maybe I can get one of my GP colleagues to give me a prescription for some heavy duty, instant acting stuff :rotfl:

If he has no choice as to whether to go, I would say the £120 is an illegal deduction.

Frankly, if I had got into this situation without seeing it coming, I would be looking at it as an opportunity to barrack the boss very loudly from the first course onwards.

PS, unpleasant as it may be, I think you should go there and support your OH if he goes. Don't leave him on his own. Perhaps a well judged word from you will do more good than anything...

It would be an illegal deduction, what if someone is sick? You simply can't go around deducting money willy nilly because your staff don't turn up to a Christmas meal, for whatever reason. It's his choice to have a Christmas meal, and his choice to pay for it.

Over the last couple of days I have been sorely tempted to pick up the phone and call my hubby's boss to tell him a few home truths, but I fear that would make life even more difficult at work for my husband. I'm not sure if saying anything at the meal would do any good either, but I can certainly praise my husband to his boss. It all feels very two-faced, and I cannot bear being with people I just don't like. Sadly I don't drink, so I have to sit stone cold sober with him

Agree go and get right into the wifes face so every one can here

Why is your hubby such an a**h*** does he treat you like s**t ....like he does his employees....

I bet there will be around of applause.

Or you could all agree not to go and send some local youths on a feebee.
  • Aye - that's why I said 'indication' and not 'guarantee'.

The OP seems convinced that a low staff turnover is a sign of BAD management and that's just not the case.

    HTH.

No, I read it differently. I think the use of grammar & punctuation made it seem as if the OP was saying the opposite.

    OH should write to boss

    Dear <A55h0l3 boss>

I do not wish to attend your self aggrandising Christmas do. I do not consent to money being deducted from my pay

    Yours sincerely

    Mr NixNox

That will probably be sufficient to make deductions illegal

Actually, the more I look at this, the more unsustainable the working relationship looks. If you are going to have a fight, have it over the Christmas do, please.
