my friend's best friend killed himself as he owed money

dont know if this is the best place to post this or come to think about it even talk about it... but i feel so sick.... and unpset.....

last week our friend cut a long story short found his best friend dead he had hung himself.....he was only in his 20's

i dont know all the reasons..... its not by place to ask...

but i do know.. that he had a huge amount of debt.... and i think a large portion of that was to the csa.....

there might have been other reasons as well... but i should imagine the weight of the debt on his shoulders didnt help..

it just makes me so sick at some of the heavy handed cruel ways in some companies try to get money out of peeps.....diff people have dif levels of worry and stress...
and i must admit i get worried and stressed..... and depressed... at the smallest things....and yes i have thought of 'ways out' of the finacial mess that we are in...
i am extremely lucky now...as the companies that we owe money to.. have now.... stopped hasseling us for money... as we pay regular amounts it might be small compared to the original payment.... but its regular

imo....i feel that companies..... that are found to have contributed to the person taking their own life..... should be in court.....putting excess pressure... worry etc....

i just wish the taboo and stigma... of being in debt... owing money.......stop people seeking help... or there should be more.. publisesed phone no.... people to talk to etc... i know there are firms and the cab.. and there are debt help lines etc.... but i feel they are still missing a load of people......especially this time of year..

its his funeral today........i will be having ' a quiet moment'
and he will be in my thoughts....plus all those other people who have taken their lives.... all becuse of debt....

sorry about this post.... but in a way i think i just needed to talk about the tragedy....

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Another reason to let everyone know about MSE. Talking can help so much sometimes.

will be joining you in quiet reflection

That's awful and unfortunately very common. Poor, poor guy he must have been too overwhelmed with it all. That's really sad.............

Thank you Martin you've probably been a lifesaver for a lot of people and not realised.

CoolTrikerChick - don't apologise for the post, the boards here are a real community, and everyone's here to be supportive.

There does need to be more awareness of debt in society, and the companies that keep offering credit to people that can't afford it do need to take some responsibility for their actions.

Will be thinking of you today

Not much I can say, but will take the time for some quiet reflection today!

I think Martin should publicise these boards/community more. Very often just being able to talk about a problem makes it half as scary and it might make things easier for so many out there if they knew about MSE. It's a bit like the Samaritans of the debt world!

  • Such a sad thing to hear, my heart goes out to the family. It sounds as if there were other issues and the debt just made it worse.

This just makes me feel very very sad. Money is just not worth the loss of a precious life.
