Raido on at work - is it more productive or less?

  • The work I do is quite complicated and requires a lot of concentration so I don't think I could do my job with constant noise in the background. TBH there is very little chatter and banter as the people around me are in the same situation - chat is saved for the coffee pod or lunch time.

I listen to various radio stations during my shift - helps the night go quicker as I am either working with just one colleague or by myself. Don't have to worry about members of the public, but I do get annoyed when some small minded colleagues who come up to me and say
"What is this **** you're listening to???"
if they don't like it then it's tough really as it is rare anyone is in my vicinity to hear it, unless they happen to walk past the ambulance I'm cleaning down.
Try not to let it bother me too much, but it's always the same sort of people and I just see it as another form of bullying/belittling that goes on at work.

I have just moved to a new base yesterday where we all share the one office. There are admin staff based they who cover the full organisation (not just my base). They like the radio on and it is down low but already it is irritating me. My job requires concentration for the planning and problem solving parts but is also people centred so need to communicate clearly. As I am just in the door I feel that I can't say anything.

  • Noticed post and sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.

Rung up the PRS for Music about renewing my licence since I was worried that they might put their fees up and I was told that this year, for the second year running, they're offering a 50% concession for small businesses as part of an agreement with the FSB.

I asked if I qualified (I run a small web design business with two other people) and whether the fact that I wasn't a FSB member mattered. Luckily I qualified and the licence was only £44 which wasn't bad, considering my car tax, TV licence, driving licence, passport all cost more than this.

So yeah - check if you qualify as a small business as you could qualify for a reduced licence.

In terms of the workplace they say it improves morale. I'm setting up a pub and want to host live music so i've been researching this somewhat.

Sitting in silence all day can be awful, it also opens the door to a bad working atmosphere between employee's.

It'd drive me slowly mad in an office though when I worked in a factory it was a life saver and I'd have gone loopy without it.

Is that because in an office you can chit chat to eachother all day, but on a factory shop floor your often not allowed to speak?

Hosting live music in a pub for entertainment provides the option for customers to walk out if the music is irritating or distracting - staff cannot.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations now apply to entertainers as well as the staff in the pub (where the legislation already applied) - something to bear in mind if you are considering live entertainment. This will provide more information.

I agree that some workplaces where music is played can make the environment a better place to work (warehouses, factory shop floors etc) however, where more levels of concentration is required, many people may find background music a distraction.

From experience - should that not be the other way round?

I'd always have a radio on in a factory/office environment to drown out the babblings of the muppets one has had to work with in the past if nothing else.

Although ClassicFM would drive me nuts.

And I expect they are delighted not to be able to hear you.
