Raido on at work - is it more productive or less?

What are peoples thoughts about having a radio playing in your office or place of work? Reason I ask is that we have recently got a radio in our office (Classic Fm) and I think it relaxes people a bit more and takes away a bit of stress? :-) Does this make workers more productive or less? What do you think?
Apologies for the spelling of Radio I can't change it...!

I wouldn't want to be speaking to customers with the radio on in the background.0

I much prefer it - I had one at my old company and it really perked people up. Quiet enough so that people calling in can't hear it but loud enough for you and your colleagues to listen.
I really miss my radio.
Trying to become debt free but this site makes me spend a fortune!!!

It would drive me mad having background noise on all the time and you can't cater for everyone's preferences. Not a good idea.0

Well i haven't worked in a office, but on the factory floor it's a great way of taking your mind as such off the job and gave you a sort of rhythm when i was working. Still it was really loud and it did always come in handy to drown out the supervisor when he came round to complain :rotfl:0

when I'm on my own I always have R4 on.
with others around it would need to be v quiet because I have a mild hearing loss, and some kinds of background noise make it impossible for me to hear.
however, be aware that you may need to have a licence from the PRS if you are listening to music at work. some threads on the small biz board about this: royalty free CDs are available to get round this.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
It'd drive me slowly mad in an office though when I worked in a factory it was a life saver and I'd have gone loopy without it.
On the other hand my OH and his team work in an office and don't seem to be able to function without Radio 1 playing quietly in the corner to the extent when they moved offices and couldn't get a signal my OH bought a digital radio.0 -
I think its good to have the radio on in the office - it breaks up other noises too - having worked in offices with and without a radio I can say without doubt the offices with the radio on are more relaxed and pleasant to work in.
IMHO it is a personal thing though.You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0 -
I dotn work in an office but a workshop and theres always music playing, i used to stream absolute radio but was told it was using too much bandwidth (which i think is BS as other people were streaming music) . Ive now got a digital radio and i listen to that, it doesnt calm me as such but i prefer the music on rather than quietness as i have something to hum to0

At my old office (with phone staff) we had the radio on for the world cup and it drove me mad, I could hear something but not enough to work out what it was.
I did go for an interview with a mobile phone service in Loughbourgh and they had the radio on almost full blast and a pool table in the same room as the phones..Couldn't have coped with that as it would have left me with a headache each working day.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
