Tower Bridge 20MPH Speed Limit!
Comments
-
Have you heard of the expression 'wear and tear'? The faster you drive the greater that is.
If the traffic is quicker the more traffic cross the bridge in certain amount of time. Therefore damage happens quicker. But in a day the same amount of traffic will cross therefore the same 'wear and tear' will be applied.
I don't see how a slow speed prevents damage.
Vehicles are now longer on the bridge longer. There is now more weight been applied the structure at one time. This could be damaging the bridge to.
Are they just using Historical Heritage ar an excuse?davetrousers wrote: »Querying whether or not driving at a certain speed damages the bridge or not doesn't change the fact that the speed limit was on display as were speed camera signs and you exceeded the speed limit.
!!!!!! happens, deal with it and move on.
This is a money saving forum. And if someone thinks something is a 'rip off' - an attempt make money rather than road safety they have a right to debate if they think it is fair or not.
Some people see speed camera as money makers anyway and that they don't work. Road safety campaigners will think the opposite. It is an on going debate.
But this is different from the norm. Usual argument is slower speed saves lives. And I agree with having slower speeds near schools etc. But this isn't about road safety it is supposedly historical heritage.
Also the cameras weren't yellow. I didn't know there were any exemptions for this. Its worth investigating further.
The sign are there but is also a lot street furniture. Not an excuse but it does make it harder to spot signs.

Get the Traffic Regulation Order for this Road.
Research what the exemptions are for not having yellow cameras.
On pepipoo.com there is mention of an issue of missing or bent sign0 -
Would still happen at 20mph
Ha Ha I knew I should have kept my gob shut.
I aint a scientist so don't shoot me down.:o
It seems the the powers that be have decided that the frequency of vehicles travelling at more then 20mph, would approach the frequency of the structure. Remember the millennium bridge when they had to close it and put dampers on it! The frequency of people walking in step started the bridge swinging. Or on a larger more disastrous scale remember galloping Gertie?0 -
It's probably been worked out with a worse case scenario of lots of large vechiles constantly driving over it a 30mph.
If it was to do with the frequency of the structure the traffic would have to be constantly travelling at the extact speed or near to cause damage.
But the flow of traffic is constantly changing.0 -

Or it could be just a nice little earner.:D0 -
I assume it's on the basis that traffic travelling at 30mph is more likely to have an accident which could potentially damage the bridge, there are a lot of pedestrians on the bridge as it is a very popular tourist site and also having a average speed cameras could mean the traffic is all travelling at roughly the same speed which could reduce the chance of an accident.
The speed limit of 20mph is in big letters on the road surface.
