In the 1970s and 1980s it was quite normal for people to have their telephone on a "party line" shared with a neighbour. It helped people to afford it, and to become accustomed to the new technology and find it useful. I suspect that sharing an internet connection would work in much the same way.

I any case I suspect there's no stopping the redoubtable Ms Jacks xxx when she gets her momentum going. ;)

I suspect you are right! :D:o Thanks for posting that. :T We had a party line shared with next door when I was little. I don't remember much about it except that it had a lock on it!

I think that most people secretly admire her viewpoint ...but we (or certainly I) are just trying to point out the very real risks of her approach to allowing her connection to be shared in a potentially uncontrolled manner.:)

And I really really do appreciate it. :) :T I know what I'm like when I get my gung ho head on. I know I need calm reasoned voices to help me spot pitfalls in advance and guard against them. Thank you so much for posting. :)

I've mentioned the idea to my in house techies - both of whom work in IT - and they didn't dismiss the idea out of hand. :j They had reservations - and questions - but thanks to you guys I already had answers and solutions. :T:A They seem to think they have the know-how to make this relatively safe for us.

My husband - who knows me all too well :o:D - had already noted the absence of one of our laptops, and paid attention to whose hands were carrying it when it returned for a study session then went away again. :o:rotfl:

So basically he knew already what was happening with our teenage neighbour, and isn't terribly fazed about adding another family too.

Both he and my son are prepared to volunteer their time to set up, secure and maintain networks for as many local organisations as I can raise enough money to equip. Yay!:T:dance::beer::j:j  :T

They said they would prefer this option to me inviting them all round to use ours. ;):rotfl:
