    Hi Matt,

I think you're getting your systems confused here a bit.

It was NICE that produced a report that said that 6 monthly check ups had no evidence of any benefit to patients, and that recall intervals should be tailored to the needs of the individual patient, with some needing to be seen much more frequently and the most healthy having intervals of 12-24 months.

This report, which in itself is quite sensible, was taken by the DoH and spun into press reports that said 'You only need to see your dentist every 2 years'.

And the new NHS contract was based on patients attending yearly.

No account at all to the patients that need to be seen more frequently.

Dentists with patients on private plans have no reason to change the frequency they see patients at all, and that monthly plan will be set up with a specific recall interval in mind, so if it does change to more/less frequent, the fees should change as well.

If it doesn't, then you would have a legitamate complaint.

The bit about patients ending up in MaxFax units, it would all have to go very wrong to end up there, but if you're having major stuff done, then major stuff can go wrong.

By actually treating kids with cavities rather than farming them all off for General Anaesthetic clearences at hospital, because I can't afford the time to spend with them, I think I have saved the NHS more than I have cost it over the years.

As for better quality dentists in different countries, that has never been an issue with me.

It is a fact that it is much easier to operate in some other countries, as they dont have the same level of regulation and bureaucracy as this country. But that is not a bad thing so long as the dentist still takes all the right precautions anyway.

I would no more recommend that someone comes from overseas to see me as I would recommend someone to go overseas for treatment. It is the continuation of care issue that worries me.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I just returned from visiting my friend who has been living in Thailand for the last ten years. He mentioned that most of his family and friends visit his local dental surgey when they are in Thailand.
I needed my Vaneers replacing so i called in and got a quote £900 for 8 new vaneers. Anyway i got them replaced and i can't explain how good the service was. I'll definately be going back in the future. I must say that i was a bit sceptical about having them done abroad but when i saw the surgery and spoke to the dentist they put me at ease, also i spoke to many expats who lived there and they all gave glowing reports.

I think you need to ask around before just jumping in and having work done.
I am over the moon with my new vaneers.

Hmmmmmmm...it does seem that both the profession and the government are equally to blame for the very, very negative attitude that the public have of dental provison in this country.

If there was any credibility in the points/arguments raised by the dental representatives on this board then, multiple posters would back up what the vested interests aka Toothsmith etc have to say for themselves( good care, good value, faith in the professionals)......but to date on numerous threads and hundreds of posts it has patently failed to happen.
