Refused Basic Bank Account

It's just that I post on another debt board and there are often situations like yours - sometimes people have said that when they checked the bank had automatically done a credit search without even thinking! Some people had tried the Co-op and been turned down on the phone or in the branch but when they wrote had been accepted. Also, have you checked to make sure you are on the electoral roll - they do check that. Usually Nat West and co-op (know you can't do this one) take bankrupts without a problem, so persevere. Good luck!0

I spoke to Nat West this morning.
The woman I spoke to was very nice but said that because my application had been refused there was no information about it on the system
I told her the reason that I'd applied for it and that I thought the basic bank account was for people in situations like mine - she didn't comment on that - just said I would need to go into the branch and discuss it with them. I'm not sure if it's worth it really. I've applied to Bank of Scotland because you can do that on line - waiting to hear from them. Yorkshire Bank is next on the list!
I feel a bit worried about this. What if I can't open one anywhere. Have I got the worst credit record in the world?

The co-op will not refuse you!!
The only reason it would is if you were listed as being involved in fraud in some way0 -
But I cant' do co-op because I already bank with Smile which is part of the co-op

I have a bad credit record too I even defaulted on my Halifax current account! I tried a couple of months ago to open a Nat West Step Account followed by a CO-OP Cashminder account and received letters declining me from both banks. I felt worried too and quite down because I couldn't even open a basic bank account. I had applied for the Natwest account online and CO-OP over the phone and decided that I would go into a bank branch to open an account.
I went into the Lloyds TSB and the women I spoke to was very nice. I explained my situation that I had been made unemployed, had defaults and a poor credit rating so I was looking to open a Basic Cash Account. She entered my details into the computer and my application was referred, I thought oh no I've been declined again!. But the assistant explained that this was quite normal and she just had to phone head office for an authorisation code. 5 minutes later she was back entered the code and my account was opened! I signed a few forms set-up phone and internet banking and then left with my sort code and account number and various booklets - I was really chuffed! The women even said that they would review my account in a about a year and consider upgrading me to a current account with debit card and cheque book!
My card arrived in the post 2 days later with my pin arriving a couple of days after that. I would highly recommend the Lloyds TSB as they had opened my account within 15 minutes and have provided a quick, reliable and friendly service so far. The only downside to their basic account is that the card is not a debit card and you can only withdraw cash from Lloyds TSB cash machines - although I haven't found this to be a problem as there is a Lloyds TSB branch with cash machine in almost every town in the UK and they have cash machines at a few of the supermarkets in my area too.0 -
Thanks Daverave - that makes me feel more hopeful. Perhaps the problem is doing it on the internet / phone. I will try speaking to a real live human next time.
Thanks again
