Ps Currently I pay extra tax for my larger engine with the fuel tax I pay. If it gets to the point where it's costing me more to park my car up at night than it is to drive it, then I'll rent it out to a nightime taxi firm at an attratcive rate  :rotfl:

pps If you also want to save yourselves the cost of a nightime parking charge I would be happy to ensure that your car is kept driving all night long and you can even have a % return of the profits from fares. (sounds like a profitable buisiness idea to me :D )

Plus a higher rate of road tax. My Mondeo is in one of the higher VED bands - wonder if it would be affected by Richmond council's proposals? It's hardly a Range Rover!

    Car racism

Err, sorry? You're calling taxing SUVs a form of racism? Are you mad? There's some ridiculous nonsense in this thread but that is offensive in the extreme. Strawman arguments abound. Lack of logic raised to an artform. Hey, let's ban vans and lorries! Never mind that the country will grind to a halt without ol' Eddie Stobart and his friends transporting our food around for us! If I can't drive my land barge, then Eddie's going to have to get a new job! I can't fit my two kids in an estate! I have to take my dogs to the supermarket! Blah, blah, blah.

I have no objections to people with a legitimate need for a SUV driving one. Farmers and the like. I do object to Florence from Chelsea driving little Michaela and Rosie half a mile to school every morning, spewing out tonnes of noxious fumes, ruining road surfaces with her three-tonne behemoth or Dave who thinks he's cool driving around in his X5 whilst on the phone and tailgating me on the motorway. Most people do not need a SUV. Most people could quite happily make do with an estate (like a Volvo - much safer than a SUV) or (shudder) a people carrier.

Some owners of 4x4s like to comment on how safe their tanks make them feel: "When I'm in an accident, I'll be all right. Little Frogmella and Jesus will be just fine." Well, what about the people who you crash into? Do you think they'll be fine as they try to separate your bull bar from their spleen and your wing mirrors from their blood-soaked heads? If you, in your X5, crash into me in my Golf at 60mph, I'm pretty much a goner. If you in your Volvo V70 crash into my Golf at 60mph, I'd wager that I'd stand a much higher chance of getting out - in one way or another - breathing (whether assisted or nay).

There was a government report out this morning which states that climate change is real and a massive danger to our way of life. Perhaps some of the more irresponsible element on this thread should consider reading it.

    Bring it on, Richmond.
