One thing I have gained from this thread is that some people think that 4X4 are designed purely for off roading......................:rotfl: .

Oh well perhaps they should research the sudbject they think they are experts in.

You don't need a big 4x4 to pull caravan  You get a car with a decent amount of torque, weight means nothing.

No Not at all but as i said in my post i often get bogged down in wet fields where as a 4x4 has no problem!!
Weight means a lot when towing actually if the car is lighter then the caravan then chances are the caravan will take over down a hill and cause you to snake and potentially crash.
The recommended ration is the caravans wieght is 85% of the curb weight of the car. the caravan i have my eye on now weights 1500kg and just think alot of the twin axle caravans weigh over 1700kg not many cars can tow this safely!!!

  • oh who cares about 4x4s? They are already passe and the vehicle of aspiring chavs who think burberry is dead classy ;-) - you know a trend is soooo declasse when phil mitchell and ian beale are shown having one in EE :-)
  • Its a free country, I love my 4x4, its the best part of 3 tonnes, and I am happy that if I get shunted by some person who is too busy smoking a fag and screaming at her kids in her council estate Kev'd up vauxhal Nova, well I am happy that my family will be safe and they can worry after themselves.

Most people who complain about 4x4's are just jealous idiots like Mr Idle, maybe if you were not so idle you could afford one :rotfl:

Well done. You looked at my name and made a connection. All be it wrong.
I have no purpose for a 4x4. My family and I are safe in the car we drive. I enjoy knowing that my car is safer than several 4x4's. I enjoy knowing that my car does more per gallon thus more money in my pocket.

Is this not discrimination in a democratic society. If you wish to purchase and drive a 4x4 then surely it should be up to you and not the goverment to try and stop this by high taxes.
After all this whole debate about trying to make the environment greener by taxing big 4x4 is just a smoke screen, they use the arguement as a cover knowing it will not have an effect on the environment but will rake in lots more taxes. Same arguement for speed cameras only there to raise money.

I dont own a 4x4 but wish i could, i am a caravaner and i quite often get stuck on wet fields were a 4x4 often comes to my rescue. 4x4s are excellant tow vehicals due to their weight and power!!

We live in a supposive free state so its freedom of choice!!!

Do some research into how much is actually made by the governments from speed cameras. Then have a look how much of that is invested in trying to make this county better. However that's a different matter so I'll say no more.

As for the caravan and towing aspect. There are several cars which offer 4x4 capability when it comes to towing.

They were designed for purely off road. Over the years they have been developed to do both. People now days buy them because they are ignorant of the danger they pose to others and adopt the 'my family is safe so fcuk the rest' attitude. The whole idea of a 4x4 is lost to these people.
This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down
  • and yes I think it does come down to jelousy,

Dear god, no! I wouldn't drive a 4x4 if I was given one!

I could afford one of I wanted to, but I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. And as for keeping up with the Joneses, it's not one of my failings, so no worries there. :D

I must say I quite like the idea of taxing according to mileage/petrol consumption, but I'm sure the me-me-me brigade would then be crying on discrimination on different grounds, suppression of their freedom as an individual and other spurious comments as global warming accelerates around us.
  • You obviously have no need for one then! but if you had DH's job and lived where we live, you would have to think differently.
We certainly don't keep up with the jones',as said it's a necessity for us.

I saw a woman on the news the other night moaning about towny Land Rover drivers being targetted - her desperate need for a huge vehicle emitting high levels of nasty gases was because she had 3 kids. Now unless her kids are Fatty Arbuckle, Rik Waller and Michelle MacManus I reckon she could get them in the back of a Honda Civic, don't you?.

We could have had an audi, range rover etc but we don`t have an image problem so went for the skoda and by golly are we glad. It is a super workhorse of a car. Holds 5 easily and can get two folding bikes plus luggage in the boot

going up the posts a bit: I used to tow horses and nothing less than a landrover would do the job

I also towed a caravan and for safety`s sake ie the all important weight ration, would only ever have used a 4x4 such as the discovery. Anything bigger wouldn`t be needed
