Alun - you really need to take your head out of your !!!! - your child is nearly 19 years old and you are still trying to blame others for his actions.

If he is off to Austria leaving behind store card and mobile bills then it's a sign off what is to come unless you make him grow up.

With your constant defending, you are really no better than him.

Neither am I. 3-year credit on sofa? Pure nonsense IMO.

Income comes and goes. Anyone can become jobless tomorrow. Having said that, they do require this for providing really big credit, not mere mobile contract. Proves nothing.
Again, may be required from people with bad history. Doesn't make much sense to ask for it for a minor credit.

You can't have it both ways either there is NO easy credit, or minor credit should be easy.

I agree with some of what the OP is saying. It's time that initial credit took a bit of work to achieve, while not being impossible either.

Working for a period of time shows stability and good background, and of course you could be sacked tomorrow (unlikely though if you have been working for a while, and supply some form of basic reference, which is the entire point) - but if you believe that should be taken into account then your good credit is also pointless as you could die tomorrow so lending you money is a bad idea.

Building up a work history, having a well maintained bank account (most people get these from childhood, and Im not talking about overdrafts just the account) should be the building blocks to getting your first credit without exception - and if you do believe in no easy credit then I can't imagine why you wouldn't agree.

I also do not think the OP has blamed others as much as people seem to be saying, they know it his fault. These mistakes (as well as others) can highlight problems with the system and present an opportunity to improve. It is plain stupidity to then ignore this because of the mistakes he has made, instead figuratively sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "its his fault, and as long as I'm ok nothing else matters . . . . ."
