Can an O2 contract be suspended when student goes abroad?

this "salesman" was a schoolfriend and member of same ski club who knew the full situation but at the end of the day my son should not have entered a contract.0

You would be as well to sell the phone, as advised earlier, as it is doing nothing sitting in a drawer.
That way some of the money will offset the monthly direct debits.
When he comes back he can get a cheap phone to use, if he wants/is able.0 -
I am still amazed that 02 (presumably) authorise a contract to a barely 18 year old who was not on the Electoral Register, had no permanent or substantial job and the salesman at CPW knew to be going abroad for the following 2 winters.
Why should ordinary, decent young people be inconvenienced starting out? Why should they find it nigh impossible to participate in things? Filter out and hammer the ne'er-do-wells like your son after the fact not before.0 -
Just a long overdue update!
O2 have agreed to lower the monthly tariff but not postpone. The phone remains in a draw here in the UK and our son is still in Austria. WE have paid various amounts to 02 but they marked the "reduction" forward so it will only come onto the bill next month.

so your son had no knowledge of this? yes all CPW's fault0 -
The 'schoolfriend' was on a healthy commission and was doing his job of selling phone contracts. If your son passed the necessary credit and ID check then there is no reason whatsoever why he should not have been given a contract.
If you son had a valid shotgun licence and legally bought a gun with it, would it then be the seller's fault if he misused it?
The law says that adulthood starts at 18, not at some indeterminate age before or after depending on the individual. No free lunch, and no free laptop

He's either an adult or he's not, there's plenty of responsible 18 year olds who enter into contracts, honour them and don't need nannying. All O2 will have done is a credit check on him, if he passed that then he's allowed the contract, if he was planning to go abroad then he really should have considered his actions more carefully.Just a long overdue update!

You can't blame o2 and you can't blame CPW, it's 100% your sons fault, he's legally an adult and he should have known better, if he's not mentally mature enough to make adult decisions then it's your job as a parent to look out for him, so why did you allow him to take out a contract and why did you allow him to go abroad alone?0 -
OP is just starting to look silly now.
Blame blame blame blame - everyone else.
If you are that good at blaming, then start looking on your own doorstep as you are the one that brought this son up to act the way he has.0 -
I've had my O2 contract since I was 18. Always paid on time in full and i've never needed anyone to bail me out. Just because your son isn't yet mature enough to manage his finances doesn't make it everyone elses fault. You can't blame a salesperson for making a sale. You shouldn't be relying on other people to stop your son making foolish choices.Current debt: M&S £0(£2K) , Tesco £0 (£1.5K), Car loan 6K (paid off!) Barclaycard £1.5K (interest free for 18 months)0
