It's taught me to be inventive, I have just hung heavy curtains (bought in charity shop) over existing curtains using shower curtain rings, the kind that open and click shut so it was just a matter of slotting them on. Took all of 10mins. Another thing I learnt was to buy sheepskin insoles for my boots/shoes.

Have now topped up cupboards (including wine!!!!) and got sprouts for freezer - anyone see the article on BBC Breakfast news about the shortage of sprouts due to the hard frosts? Sprouts for Christmas.

Feeling like cancelling christmas - but have lasagne in the oven and bought two new books which I'm looking forward to reading probably later with my wine. What should I have learnt....

Should have had woodburner fitted in August - builder can't do it until January now.
Should have had far more stocks, because the sensible things I had in I actually didn't want to eat at all.
Got some Lime pickle as I fancied something warm.

WILL make curtains for conservatory this winter and double line them.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

When I have done the shopping today I stocked up on lots of naughty treats e.g. tinned steam puddings, crumpets for the freezer, corned beef, fray bentos pies, hot dogs, biscuits, hot chocolate and latte powder.

I was amazed at how quickly you run out of tea, coffee, milk, loo roll when you are all home all day everyday.

Now I feel i have the best of both worlds, everything we need and everything we want.

Hopefully I will be able to get back to normal tomorrow after a false start yesterday.

  • that my Yaktrax grips were a good buy, as was my Slanket

that having norovirus followed by flu in the same week, makes you feel very poorly

The combo of the above and the bad weather means I should have stocked up on dvds

On the plus side I've saved money

bring your spade / shovel in from the garden BEFORE it snows :o

always fill the kettle before you go to bed at night, the prospect of hairdrying frozen pipes always seems less grim after a cup of tea :p

Wish I had done this - have had no water since this morning :( - OH is still outside now trying to un-freeze the water pipes - Yes, they are well lagged but it was -13.4 last night :eek::eek: (well, a few miles down the road, it was).

I've got quite a few bottles of water put away, the water dudes just turn off our water for hours at a time to repair burst mains with no notice.

DH mocks me for my 'doom and gloom' preparations but secretly trusts my judgement and when I am proved spectacularly right is generous enough to give me credit

Bread and milk are easy to stock up on in advance so you don't have to join the scrum but veggies are more difficult. Have got plenty of potatoes and onions and peas in freezer but carrots go a bit sad after a few days and a lot of green veg won't keep. Have got some 'keeping' veg in the fridge for variety - savoy cabbage, celeriac and buttenut squash.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Well, OH finally got the pipes running again about ½ hour ago :j- bless him, he's absolutely frozen having been outside all that time :(. He's put extra lagging on all the pipes and wrapped the whole lot in bubble wrap - hopefully that will prevent it happening again.

Have filled up the kettle, both flasks, numerous water bottles and 6 builders buckets of water (for the dogs - we have 9) and have got a big pan of chilli bubbling away for his dinner. He wasn't expecting to eat this late but hopefully this will warm him up :).
