We have no option BUT to use agencies,

    This is simply not true.

Should clothes stores not have mannequins in the windows?.

Your point is? They actually sell the advertised items inside! Hey, another poster described me as "silly" for comparing recruitment agencies to shops.....

If candidates apply for a job which they subsequently find is not available, they have the option of not using the agency again.

Of course. But again I ask, WHEN would you tell the candidate that role is not actually real (or "live" as it seems to be referred to)? Don't really understand the avoidance of this question unless there is something to hide.

You seem to missing the point here, We have no option BUT to use agencies, If I say to myself that I want to avoid them then I'll struggle to find work, this is the main problem with agencies and they know how the economy is at the moment so they take advantage of peoples misgivings, Its easy to say you don't want to work for a actual company but you don't have that option with agencies, They could have a umbrella of about 20 company's that they seek candidates for.

Depending on your line of work, this could be true. Luckily for me, I can avoid them.

My point is that the clothes on manequins are not always available, or not in that exact size. They are put there to catch the eye and advertise what purpose the shop serves.

I wouldn't tell a candidate this ever, as the roles i source for are live vacancies.

Want to go on the direct gov website and count how many vacancies are agency and how many are not ? I bet you won't find many that is through the actual company, Specially in the kind of work I do

Change your line of work then. Agencies use job boards as a matter of course so it goes without saying the majority of jobs advertised there will be through agencies. You're not doing very well at avoiding them if you're only looking in these places.

Your assuming again which you have done loads of on this thread. I never said I only use these methods. I use the net, Visit company's and call around and I can assure you that majority of company's will tell me to go register at the agency that they use. I am not saying that all jobs are through agencies but the fact is that the majority is.

    What about the others?
What is your approach when going direct to companies?
Have you had your CV/ cover letter/ presentation skills checked/ updated?
Have you tried to change or widen your job search at all? If so, in what ways?
How many times have you registered with a recruitment agency? What types?
What line of work are you in exactly?
The only thing we know for sure, is that we know nothing
  • Oh right, so it was a retaliation comment.....

It is an unfortunate fact that in the current climate, many of us will need to widen our job search, or change our target job altogether. If jay wants to work, he may well have to do this.
