Another trick they use is if they have a long term booking they will ask if you have any holiday booked. A yes answer to this will almost certainly rule you out of the role. If you do have holidays booked Just lie to them like they will lie to you and terminate the role when your holiday starts if that is what the client wants. Do not feel guilty about this ! Always remember on a temporary role which they say is long term they can easily get rid of you at one minute to Five on the first day

They lie through their teeth just to get you and many others on their books so when they go to companies they can say I've got all these mugs waiting to start work

Completely agree but there is more to it then that. The more people they get on their books means the more potential job leads they get by worming out information from candidates when they register. For instance all jobs they have applied for, all recent interviews(contact names etc). Also any potential job leads from previous employers including names of managers and HR people.

An agency once found me my dream job, then lost it for me again for the sake of their fees (they got a higher percentage for placing the other candidate).
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • My recruitment consultant was extremely rude to me when I didn't get the job she had put me forward for. I was unemployed just before Christmas but she appeared to be more concerned about her bonus.

My personal opinion is that they practise a lot of discrimination. People who have the correct experience and qualifications don't get put forward because they are too old or not of the correct origins.

Well done :T....... you are obviously not as "silly" as me then.
I wasn't being nasty by the way.

    Ok, you are forgiven then!

I know it was naive of me to give him the information, and I have always been aware of agencies being sneaky, but I honestly didn't realise they were THAT underhand.

After reading some of the stories on here, I am disgusted at the behaviour of some recruitment agencies.

I feel very sorry for the few agencies who do behave professionally, although I doubt they stay in business long with the sharks around....

I work in IT and I have clients who are recruitment companies.

The vast majority of these companies are set up to be very sales orientated. Sales figures drive the business, commission drives the 'recruitment consultants''. As a jobseeker you are just a CV on a database, and a client you are a source of income and they will do whatever they can to get it.

There are a very few recruitment companies that actually give a **** about the people they place in work, and sadly, for most of us, these are the ones that deal with high value (read £100,000 salary) jobseekers.

My thoughts are not to be naive about these people. They are in it for the cash - not for your benefit. Cynical? maybe, but I've had a lot of experience helping these guys structure their businesses.
In the world of internet customer service, it is important to remember your competitor is only a mouse click away.
  • I am shocked by everything I've read - thank you for posting this. It seems that I too have been too trusting and perhaps naive in the past and won't be from now on!
    :T
  • I remember getting fed up with my old job, popping out at lunch to call the main recruitment company in my industry and then by the time I got back to my desk he was calling my boss asking if they could "help with any future recruitment needs". Same guy also sent round my colleague's CV 'anonymously/speculatively' to his client base, which happened to include my boss who easily worked out whose CV it was! This one also quite openly talks about where other people have been interviewed etc.

Oh and also, they once called me and said "we've got you an interview at X" and I said, that's interesting, I wasn't looking for a job" and they then proceeded to beg me to go to the interview, even though I said I wasn't interested, because "this is a new client and we want to look good, and it won't go down well if we cancel the interview now"....
  • I registered with an agency for temp work a while back but they only offered me one role, which I turned down as the money was poor and I didn't want to get trapped in that job meaning they would not bother looking for anything else for me. I must have sent her about 4 emails after that asking if they had any work for me and she never even bothered to reply!!

I just emailed her to say I now had a permanent role so she can remove me from the database. She replied (literally within 5 minutes!)"congratulations, where are you working?"

Needless to say, I will not replying!
