PCN received through post but registration plate is incorrect by one digit

Hello, can you help?
I've received a PCN through the post for a tiny tiny box junction infringement. Obviously they have found my address via the DVLA.
However, going online to pay, I notice they have me down as ****O** rather than ****0** (a letter 'oh' rather than number zero).
Clearly the DVLA have spotted the mistake and paid it no heed.
But can I dodge the PCN because they have the wrong registration?
The two accompanying photos have my plate very clearly however.

Any help much appreciated!

Normally a wrong reg no would mean that the PCN would be sent to an innocent party and you would be in the clear.

However, the only difference here is bettween an O and an 0. I doubt whether that is enough.

Your best bet would be to post about your case on pepipoo forums, start a new thread there including a scan or pic of the front and back of the PCN (just blank out car ID and PCN number). Pepipoo are the experts.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. I had a parking fine issued to me (this one was a fine) and the registration number was incorrect.

Before I noticed I wrote to the council concerned disputing the PCN? it was of course rejected. I then noticed the reg number was incorrect and I never did pay it. I kept it just in case and this was nearly 2 years ago.

I wouldnt ignore it if it was the council, It may get rather expensive. I would have thought it would be unlikely for a council ticket to
get ignored & just files away.

Private parking yes but not a council ticket.

Don't ever ignore a council ticket, but appeal it , try posting this on pepipoo.com with scans of both sides of the ticket, pictures of signs and the place where you parked, host them on tinypic and post links.

    Best of luck
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?
  • Please remove your personal bits and serial number of ticket before posting, councils have been known to lurk.

There's a difference between getting a letter completely wrong, such as a B for a W, and mistaking a 0 for an O. It would be obvious to anyone what's it's meant to read, and they did trace you after all. Registrations follow a particular notation, like A 123 BCD or AB 12 CDE so the placement of the digit will clarify whether it's a letter or number.

By all means, try pepipoo, but I fear that if the council have issued a Notice to Owner, that it's for a person, not a number, and they have that person. You really need to prove that the contravention did not occur.

Not so sure Dave. The contravention as described did not occur if there is any character wrong. Consider the registration PO02 ABC. Having this down as POO2 ABC would invalidate the PCN.

Let's see the PCN though. Whether it actually is a zero or an O could just be down to the typeface on the letter.

Personally I feel this is splitting hairs to the nth degree.

The Council is highly unlikely to cancel on those grounds and I think it would be madness to go to adjudication without something a great deal more substantial

Incorrect registration is fatal to a PCN. There is no degree of correctness - it is either right or wrong.

No, but there is a degree of common sense and I fear an adjudicator might use his in this case.
